  • Description of the initiative
The International Master in Circular Construction prepares future experts in construction projects based on circularity, attending to the entire life cycle with the Cradle To Cradle methodology. It is an online training with live classes, conceived from an innovative, immersive, collaborative and multi-focus perspective, setting the pace and the benchmark in the sector.
The transition towards a circular model involves implementing regenerative strategies throughout all phases of the life cycle of the built environment, from the initial stage of the design, extending them and making them effective until the end of life. Thus, more respectful and healthy buildings will be achieved, with lower maintenance costs, greater productivity and profitability. This new scenario requires the involvement of all the stakeholders involved: engineers, architects or industry, and also users, promoters or public officials. It is necessary to rely on technology and have reference frameworks to measure and reduce the impact to be successful.
Training with pioneering professionals in the implementation of sustainability and strategies in construction and circular economy. Learn from their experience from all perspectives and roles involved. Students work collaboratively with their peers and industry experts, evolving to enhance and apply all their new professional skills.

The central block of the program is focused on the search for the methodological application of circularity in the built environment and its integration into projects from a theoretical and practical point of view. The objective is to provide the knowledge and experience necessary for making decisions supporting the circular objectives.

Students will explore construction strategies and design decisions that encourage the implementation of circularity strategies at all scales and throughout the life cycle.

In order to achieve maximum effectiveness of the global objectives of the construction industry and based on the complexity of actors in the sector, the practice is addressed in multidisciplinary teams of 3 components, where each student takes a crucial role in the construction process. contributing the criterion in the determination of the decisions that support the circularity.
Ultimately, the well-being of the human being is the centre of all our objectives. The educational experience we offer is presented from two approaches; one is inside the program's content, and the other is from the student's didactic experience. Inside the program's content, One of the objectives is to achieve more respectful and healthy buildings with lower maintenance costs, greater productivity and profitability. One of the fundamental pillars of circularity resides in the construction of healthy and non-toxic environments. Given that the energy requirements in the future will not be the same as today, achieving the best performance and maximum efficiency requires parameterizing the user with tools such as energy simulation. Another objective is to create a change in mentality in terms of product design and the value of waste at the end of the life cycle. We conceived from the beginning with a mentality of designing without producing waste, but rather that all the excess material becomes an opportunity to create value and continue its useful life. From the experience of the program, We work collaboratively as a team and encourage the participation of all students in the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Each team makes a different example, which is exposed and shared with the rest of the students. This entire process is supported by the MIRO software tool that allows sharing progress. Collaboration is the key word to achieve the sustainability objectives that the planet requires, and we motivate and teach to make it effective.
Zigurat treats the inclusion from 2 approaches:

A new profession is being created that will be necessary for the coming years. This program paves the way for future project leaders capable of taking construction circularity to its full potential. Create a network of business fabric with tangible, measurable, reliable and prosperous proposals that will strengthen the base of the industry based on circularity and maximum use of resources.

The new challenges of the construction sector require new teachings and strategies, asking different questions and building the future we need.
We are facing a socioeconomic change. There is an increasingly widespread current in society that we must change and adapt to this change out of necessity. The whole of society must change, the social and business relations and the point of view.
The construction sector is one of the areas that adapt more slowly to changes. We use a large number of materials, and we cannot continue with a linear cycle of use and end of life in the landfill.
We focus on this need in the construction sector, trying to train all the technicians involved so that they understand how to transform the change to circularity and how they can implement it.
It is a course focused on the industry to be in contact with the company's actual needs.
    1. International company participation: Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG)
The conception of the master's degree was created in conjunction with the Eco Intelligent Growth association (EIG): Association based on the Cradle to Cradle® principles.
    2. Directors and teachers experts in circular construction projects.
For the training, teachers with a high level of mastery and experience in circularity projects under construction have been sought. References within the industry, with multidisciplinary profiles, mentor students in the different phases of the project.

Ignasi Cubiña, co-director of the master's degree, Co-founder and director of the Eco Intelligent Growth consultancy. Cradle to Cradle Ambassador.
    3. Mentoring of students by industry experts: (Hercal, Aiguasol, Bac, FINSA)
    4. University participation
University accreditation is sought: Participants who complete the International Master's program in Circular Construction obtain a double degree from the Institut de Formació Contínua – IL3 of the University of Barcelona and Zigurat Institute of Technology.
    5. Use of technology:
One Click LCA: Simple Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to request certifications.
MIRO: Collaborative work platform. Miro is a free, fast, easy-to-use online whiteboard designed to help to collaborate with others anytime, anywhere.
Projects to be selected by the students (BAC): 1. Mercury tower (Malta) - new building 2. Can framis (Barcelona) - building rehabilitation 3. Fabra coats (Barcelona)- rehabilitation infrastructure 4. Superilla (Barcelona) - new urban planning model 5. Apple store (Barcelona)-retail
The classes are the leading training activity for the development of the activities. The work will be developed in groups through the Miro platform, which will allow students to know the work and progress of their classmates in a complementary way and will give teachers access to each group's progress directly. Teachers will be able to use the platform during the first minutes of their classes to resolve doubts, make comments or give observations on the progress of the work.
    1. Be the first program in spanish to be a pioneer in circular construction.
    2. The teaching staff applies the concepts on a day-to-day basis.
    3. Design of the master by two leading companies in the sector, understanding circularity as a common good. They identify the need for transversal leadership that manages the entire circularity process throughout the life cycle.
    4. Contact the industry. Throughout the program, each one will have a role in reproducing real life and putting themselves in the shoes of the profession.
As part of the expertise, expert case study presentations will be integrated into the classes during the modules. This is to provide action criteria for the projects and offer a perspective of the proposals currently being offered in the market.
The expert's mission is not only limited to presenting an innovative or value proposition that stems from the circular model but will also play an active role in offering advice to teams in the search for the best options to integrate into ongoing projects.
Within each module, the team will have to investigate and prepare questions for the expert, one of the members being the one who will lead, from his role, the approach to the debate with the expert, with the double mission of providing a complementary vision and offering the rest of the teams concrete conclusions and guidelines to apply in their projects.
Each group will have to prepare a guide of questions to ask the expert once he finishes his presentation on the chosen case. The main objective is to ensure they cover all the relevant topics related to the phase corresponding to the module they are studying.
After that, each group will present to their classmates and the expert the main conclusions of their interview as learned in the previous session, independent contributions from their research, and the expert will give them feedback.

The last step will define the frameworks and principles of a business model for the construction sector within the circular economy. Thus, the roadmap will be obtained that facilitates the implementation of projects and new companies in the industry.
The effectiveness of growth is verified in the implementation of the project based on the circular model. In the Final Master's Project, each student must prepare, with the support of the mentor, the option that best suits their professional development:
    • Develop a Business Plan for Circular Business
    • Develop Circular Implementation Consulting
The analysis of a complete life cycle of a building is developed but starting from the end and advancing in reverse until the beginning of its conception. The modules are: 1. Circular Economy. 2. End of life cycle. 3. Use Phase. 4. Construction Phase. 5. Design Phase. 6. Development phase.
Carrying out a project to be developed during the master's degree in teams of 3, promoting collaboration as a fundamental work tool.
The students of each team carry out interviews with different experts in the sector and, later, present them to the rest of their classmates.
Today, in our society, there is some awareness of climate change, but it still needs to be improved to implement projects that meet sustainability needs.
As soon as we talk about construction, the situation becomes more complicated since it is difficult to change the mentality and the way of building within the sector. Added to this is the need to know how to carry out a financially profitable project. This training unites the concepts of circular economy and sustainability, creating the concept of circular construction that solves these problems.
Students with access to this master's degree come from Europe and Latin America, so the training covers global levels.
