The listed residential building of a former four-sided farm from the middle of the 18th century was extended with an access extension. Thus, the spatial concept had to be rethought in order to do justice to the current use as day care and also to the historical context. New residential buildings to the south (apartment building) and east create an ensemble that allows the former courtyard character to be experienced again. Compared with the period in which the listed Stadlerhof was built, the guests of the day care center housed here are decidedly young, despite their rather advanced age: The residential building of a former four-sided farmhouse dates from the late Baroque period and was carefully renovated and extended with an access extension. Thus, the spatial concept had to be rethought in order to meet the structural requirements for day care and also the historical context. When the redesign began, the existing building was carefully examined, layer by layer was uncovered, former window openings were restored, encumbered wooden floors were removed, new-age paints were removed, and some of the century-old components were brought back to life. Parallel to the monument - on the spot where a barn stood as an outbuilding on the property - is today the elongated new building of the apartment house. Another new building with two apartments adjoins to the east, recreating the former courtyard ensemble. The two apartment buildings have been given a natural wooden facade, whose surfaces of untreated larch, similar to a barn, will weather and gray over time. Thanks to the high level of commitment of the private building owners, who were very keen to have the building restored in accordance with the preservation order, and the good and close cooperation with the District Heritage Preservation Office and the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the building with its historic, carefully reworked inventory now shines again in all its glory.

The sustainability of the project is based on the simple fact that the monument was carefully renovated and supplemented with natural materials in a manner appropriate to the monument, thereby enabling the building fabric with historical relevance to be used in a contemporary manner and anchored in the urban context in a new way. High-quality, identity-creating buildings live longer and are therefore unbeatably sustainable.
Unusual for a care facility is the use of a selection of untreated and re-exposed surfaces - no trace of the usually very sterile unpleasant atmosphere. The traces of the past combined with the materials used create a pleasant, warm and homey environment in which residents can age with dignity.
For the new use as day care, a narrow extension was added to the monument, which ensures accessibility with a passenger elevator and serves as an additional escape route. The east facade now lies within the access extension with new, plastered articulation elements in the base area and as window flaps. Light-colored large-format floor tiles, the wooden staircase in oak and partially visible concrete surfaces create a contemporary contrast. The extension is deliberately set off architecturally: vertical window bands on both sides form a joint between the new building and the existing structure and bring plenty of daylight into the modern main entrance area.
The Stadlerhof in its new old form of a three-sided courtyard offers the possibility of different generations living together in different forms of housing. In the monument there are day care places for the older generation, the apartment house with affordable small apartments is ideal for e.g. single seniors with proximity to day care, hospital and city center, and in the residential building there are two larger apartments for younger couples with children. Everyone meets in the common courtyard and benefits from each other. Lived community in our society, not only technically but also interpersonally barrier-free.
On a local level, in addition to the dedicated and curious client, an efficient team of specialist planners (local and regional) and excellent craftsmen were available for the realization of this project. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments (regional) provided competent and goal-oriented support for the remodelling project. After all, Cariatas made it possible to use the historic property as a day care center, thus breaking new ground on a national level in terms of the design, materiality and aesthetics of day care facilities. An example that will hopefully soon find imitators in Europe.
Architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, structural design, technical building equipment, fire protection planning, energy consulting, approval authorities, city administration, lower monument protection authority and Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments Munich, as well as all executing trades with their know-how for the implementation and success of the demanding project.
The elderly and those in need of care are no longer housed in a facility whose top priority is functionality and hygiene, but rather they stay in sophisticated, historic spaces with valuable, natural and stimulating surfaces. As a result, they experience the appreciation they deserve and still feel they belong to society.
The innovative aspect of this project can be summarised under the heading "Ageing with Dignity". Many citizens of the European Union will be lucky enough to live to an old age, but the many reports about catastrophic conditions in nursing homes raise serious doubts as to whether "being old" in our society is really a good thing... This historic building, in its use as a day care centre, builds a bridge between people and architecture. Thanks to the architectural redesign, the Stadlerhof is allowed to age gracefully and thus offers rooms in which the day guests are also allowed to grow old gracefully.
At the beginning of the redesign process, the historic building was carefully studied, removing countless layers of modern colors and additions to bring the centuries-old components back to their original appearance. Starting with the facade, whose new design is based on samples of the lowest and therefore oldest layer of paint exposed during the restoration process.
Existing buildings and monuments can be refurbished, modernized, revitalized and upgraded, thereby making a major contribution to society's need for building space in a resource-efficient and sustainable way. History is perpetuated, identity is preserved and livable places with memories are created.
Use of natural, regional materials and respectful treatment of existing buildings (further construction instead of demolition), also for the care and senior citizen sector.
