Why a festival on the sea and Posidonia oceanica? Because we want to raise awareness of the importance of defending Posidonia oceanica, capable of maintaining the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean and with it that of the Tremiti Islands MPA.
Because we believe in the union of Culture, Education, and Environmental Protection as a means to achieve a truly ecological and sustainable transition, which has always been the spirit of the "Laboratorio del Mare".
The Festival is aimed at residents, tourists, students, scientists, professionals, and operators linked to scientific research and tourism.
- Environmental educational activities on the beach
- Snorkelling and diving activities with marine biologists
- Boat excursions to get to know the Tremiti Islands from the sea
- Evening meetings with distinguished guests from the world of science, culture and journalism
- Evening video screenings to learn about the environmental and cultural aspects of the Tremiti Islands MPA.
Objectives:
- Promote and enhance the Tremiti Islands MPA also beyond its borders;
- Promote good practices on sustainable development;
- Promote quality tourism that respects the environment;
- To publicize the activities of the 'Laboratorio del Mare', which for years has been dedicated to scientific research, the environment, culture, and tourism.
- Educate on the protection of the sea;
- Spread the principles of Citizen Science;
- Comply with goals 14 and 17 of Agenda 2030.
The expected results are: increasing the flow of conscientious travelers, international visibility and media attention as well as
magazines specializing in science and adventure travel, increasing income from local tourism, collecting scientific data on
biodiversity by continuously monitoring the state of the habitats, deseasonalisation, repeatability, useful data for academic
institutions and administrations to protect the sites.
The festival includes an initiative taking place simultaneously between the Tremiti Islands and Barcelona, characterized by marine snorkeling and diving activities, called Biomaratò, the innovative citizen science competition of photographic detection of marine fauna and flora, which will see Spaniards and Italians competing in the hunt for biodiversity. The activity will allow enthusiasts to contribute to marine scientific research.
There will also be conferences dedicated to the sea, with the participation of experts and researchers, as well as activities for children, to raise awareness and educate future generations on the protection and appreciation of our most precious environmental heritage.
To know to appreciate is the motivation that drives the organization of the festival to share freely, to defend and protect our environment in the name of Posidonia oceanica, in regression in many areas of the Mediterranean. The regression of its seagrass beds is indicative of excessive anthropization and pollution and the resulting overfishing and global warming over the last 50 years.
Appreciating the seabed means learning to love and make sustainable the coexistence of man, nature, and tourism in marine areas. The activities that the Posidonia Festival AMP Tremiti Islands offers are intended to send out an educational and participatory message to trigger healthy behavior in one of the most beautiful natural environments in the world and beyond.
Everyone, including tourists, visitors, and island inhabitants can freely take part in the activities, subject to prior booking.
The main purpose is to make the islands and their biodiversity known and experienced, to
contribute to better conservation of marine and terrestrial habitats, and reduce the impact of the visitors' ecological footprint.
Explore and survey the marine biodiversity of the Tremiti Islands marine protected area, with the participation of citizens, in
recreational snorkeling and scuba diving activities, combined with marine biology sessions.
Marine citizen science can promote less impactful tourism and increase tourists' awareness of respecting places and
implementing good practices. It encourages much more exciting and engaging experiences in nature by involving visitors in
research projects and safeguarding the ecosystems explored.
All the activities are carried out under the supervision and support of trained staff, such as biologists and eco guides.
The initiative involves visitors in exploration, research and analysis, with snorkelling and scuba diving activities, which visitors can
book. Onshore, activities continue with lessons in basic marine biology, analysis and collecting photographs of the habitats
explored, and on-site science workshops.
A cross-border partnership with the Catalan company Anellides is of great scientific value since this company is a pioneer in
scientific tourism. The cooperation aims to create a tour network and exchange and to make known the diversity of marine
biodiversity in two different areas of the Mediterranean Sea as well as to create conscious tourism.
The expected results are: increasing the flow of conscientious travelers, international visibility and media attention as well as
magazines specializing in science and adventure travel, increasing income from local tourism, collecting scientific data on
biodiversity by continuously monitoring the state of the habitats, repeatability, useful data for academic institutions and administrations to protect the sites.
For lovers of the sea, the Tremiti Islands are a magical place, almost a meeting point for all forms of life that populate the Mediterranean seabed and that at certain times or periods of the day seem to meet here, with the sole purpose of providing emotions.
The Mediterranean Sea and that at certain times or periods seem to meet here, with the sole purpose of providing emotions. The points worthy of a visit and suitable for every type of experience are truly numerous, in the whole archipelago numbering more than forty (40). Those who decide to experience a journey where they rediscover themselves and their relationship with nature, are involved in an exciting program
of activities, a true Tremiti Islands passport to be filled with emotions:
a) snorkeling and scuba diving (guided exploration of the seabed and coastal marine habitats)
b) Marine exploration of submerged archaeological sites
b) Marine biology workshop
In our opinion, this proposal favors a much more exciting and engaging experience in nature making citizens participate in the protection of places and ecosystems, also by involving them in projects
conservation and scientific research projects; promote less impactful tourism and increase the awareness of visitors to respect places and activate good practices; in fact, the problems of the
strong anthropic impact on ecosystems is often ignored.
The aim is to encourage depersonalization as they are activities that can be practiced all year round, our proposal will be carried out in the summer and autumn and will be replicated along the Catalan coast at the city of Barcelona as an experimental model by the company 'ANELLIDES' and 'MARLIN TREMITI'. The proposal is replicable in various sites and areas of the Mediterranean, in this respect, our vision is to stimulate the emergence of a network between various cities where the same activities.
This new proposal relaunches the offer by bringing innovation, increased sustainability, and a clear immediate and future
vision to project the marine protected area into the dynamic context of the Mediterranean Sea and in keeping with the new
European strategies.
The proposal envisages the adoption of best environmental practices and mechanisms to minimize the impact on the
environment and respect for anti-covid norms.
All citizens are involved in exploration, research and analysis activities. The marine citizen science can promote less impactfully tourism and increase tourists awareness of respecting the sea and implementing good practices to protect it. It encourages visitors to be involved in research projects and safeguarding the ecosystems explored, therefore their experiences in nature will be more conscious. BARI SEA LIFE values:
1. Sustainable tourism
2. Innovations in the tourism sector with a strong scientific connotation
3. Enhancement of the urban coastal area
4. Citizen Science activities
5. Ocean Litteracy (workshops, TED Talk; guides, documentaries, etc.).
6. Replicable model
Marine citizen science activities are certainly replicable in every area of the Mediterranean to create a conscious community that is attentive to environmental protection, generates sustainable profit with the birth of businesses linked to the blue economy, and implements good sustainable living practices.
The strategic aim is to enhance the environmental and cultural resources of the Tremiti Islands, seeking to maintain and foster their usability over time, to ensure the social and economic growth of the area. Promote tourist sustainability, reducing the anthropic impact and encouraging better management of marine and terrestrial habitats, involving visitors during recreational excursions in conservation, exploration, and scientific research activities. At the same time, the perception, interaction, and relationship between man and nature is amplified, the resulting well-being projecting towards a healthy and conscientious lifestyle.
healthy and conscientious lifestyle. The 'Posidonia festival' initiative aims to combine recreational activities of marine and terrestrial exploration with citizen science, involving the
visitors in conservation programs to encourage the creation of an innovative and replicable model at various sites of interest throughout the year. How? The dives can be enjoyed by the able-bodied and
differently-abled with data collection, exploration of underwater archaeological sites, coastal trekking, and marine biology workshops. Involvement in exploration, research, and analysis activities involves all age groups, with targeted activities, planned and by
reservation. Visitors are accompanied by the 'MA.RE. LABORATORY' team, with the collaboration of 'MARLIN TREMITI' and 'ANELLIDES'. Then the users, assisted by the marine biologist and/or the diving guide, have the opportunity to immerse themselves in this dynamic and unique experience thanks to the archipelago's special features. The values:
1. Replicable model
2. Sustainable tourism
3. Innovation in the tourism sector with a strong scientific connotation
4. Developed and internationally known marine area
5. Citizen Science activities
As already demonstrated in other Mediterranean areas, notably Catalonia, citizen science can foster a greater awareness of visitors to respect places and activate good practices during their stays, because citizens and visitors feel involved in concrete actions of research and protection of the territory.
We hope to:
a. Obtain a good survey and collection of scientific data on marine biodiversity;
b. Obtain an initial qualitative and quantitative description of the richness and distribution of benthic and pelagic species surveyed by the volunteers;
c. Long-term monitoring for the enrichment of the dataset;
d. Educate consumers on sustainable consumption of fish stocks and make them aware of lesser-known species;
e. Promoting responsible tourism to safeguard the biodiversity and ecological value of the Bari coastline;
Engaging coastal communities of citizens is the key to ensuring better management of marine resources and striking a balance between the exploitation of natural resources and their conservation.
At the end of the project, a socio-economic spin-off is expected through an increase in the number of national and international visitors, an increase in the number of citizens involved in the surveys, the involvement of more local diving centers and companies operating in the blue economy.
The main benefit of involving citizens in science activities and then in measures proposal is the fact that people become more aware, direct involved, and concerned. By this people can see the easiest to apply, less costly, and high efficient ways to solve issues. Sometimes, researchers and public authorities have a huge paper burden that complicates every step and makes it hard to accept that complex problems need simple solutions.
Given the programs implemented in the Mediterranean area and the current scientific literature available, it is evident how MCS projects contribute to the creation of new scientific citizenship, bringing non-experts closer to the world of science, or involving individuals who already show interest.
The direct involvement of the citizens in the coastline monitoring process raises awareness of the current issue in a scientific way. Moreover, the community created will have the chance to interact and discuss with some researchers that explain the way data will be interpreted and how results will be extrapolated.
Becoming part of the monitoring stage and having the possibility to propose measures and solutions, that have a high chance to be adopted, gives people a sense of ownership of an area, an issue, or a project. In this way, they will ensure the follow-up and the sustainability of the process.
Citizen science can bring a lot of benefits for society, for science, policy, and for the participants themselves.
