The "Catalogare in...Piazza" project saw the synergy of local organizations (Retake, GTA Tourist Guides, Castello and Parco di Maredolce, 2nd district of the Municipality of Palermo) involved in the training of young people and in the protection of cultural heritage, allowing for the implementation of the European guidelines for educational and pedagogical orientation. The project, born from the need to involve the school world in an increasingly aware growth path towards the cultural heritage understood as a wide-ranging educational resource, intends to promote an active citizenship education path and environmental education by fielding didactic actions aimed at involving the participating students through the didactic methodology of cataloguing. The formula of global education, adopted in the project, has made it possible to achieve the objectives of: Education in Solidarity, Human Rights, Sustainable Development, Peace, Interculture. The potential of the project places it among the best didactic strategies to promote the knowledge and study of the territory through the cataloguing process, a scientific and analytical didactic path. The main objective of the project was to initiate, through the cataloguing methodology, the knowledge of the territory in order to make the students acquire the territorial identity starting from the closest cultural and environmental heritage. Using the cataloguing method has made it possible to implement a network of civil and social educational alliances to offer students new ways of learning in the social, cultural and economic fabric of their own urban community. The knowledge and study of the architectural and monumental emergencies of the UNESCO itinerary and the presence in the district of industrial archeology structures. The involvement of local communities has allowed the students to interact with the territory and the productive testimonies with a significant educational and didactic impact.

The didactic actions led the students to visit and explore the area by involving the local communities, such as e.g. the canning industry Ex Agrumaria Corleone. The study of the serious damage produced in the last century by the abandonment and degradation of the southern coast of Palermo was an important formative moment: from the areas reduced to waste dumps, to industrial discharges, to contamination due to trade. In fact, the cataloguing of some factories of Industrial Archeology has allowed a historical investigation in the territory, from the revolution of the end of the 19th century, up to the great changes that took place following the two world wars, and even further up to the "sacco di Palermo", a period of serious crime and widespread illegality that amazed the students and allowed teachers to intervene on the rights and duties of citizens. To convey respect and environmental sustainability to students, a number of days dedicated to plogging, an important training activity, have been scheduled. Young people have practised this coastal and beach cleaning activity by collecting dozens of bags of rubbish, combining love for nature with respect for and reconfiguration of the coast. The safeguarding of the territory and its protection have been the subject of cultural, social and political study. The study and the documentation produced is the first act of safeguarding above all through the means of cataloguing which testifies to the facts and historical periods that interest it, as well as the state of conservation. They were able to see how technology can change the world and how important it is for them to use it correctly. They have learned that the earth must be respected and not violated because it does not belong to us but to the generations to come.
With the cataloguing activity, the students visited and analysed the Arab-Norman monuments of the UNESCO itinerary of the second district of the municipality of Palermo and the industries of the south coast from the early 1900s. The south coast that still preserves memories of ancient watchtowers, over time was also a bathing beach until it experienced the season of unbridled building expansion that caused abuse and degradation. Worth noting are the cataloguing laboratories of the Agrumaria Corleone canning industry and those of the Florio Stand: the first to help young students understand the state of degradation of an important example of the Palermo economy of the 20th century; the second an example of the recovery and enhancement of a precious testimony of the Liberty style in Palermo. They studied the scale maps and digital plans to fully understand the evolution of the territories. They understand that the environment must be treated as if it were a creature, with love and respect. They understood how close the history of Europe is to our present: they studied how the Norman kings and also King Frederick II, of the dynasty of the Hohenstaufen, have been able to reign in our island of Sicily, uniting people in peace so different from each other in culture, language and religion. This has helped students understand the current dynamics of immigration. The cataloguing workshops allowed the students to measure, photographing and drawing, but also reporting on bibliography and sitography, consulting with each other and comparing the data achieved or the difficulties faced. Cataloguing by drawing has allowed each student to "detect" the aesthetic data by "revealing" to his awareness the territorial identity, a fundamental component for an active citizenship. Liberty Style in Palermo represented a cultural and artistic movement of European scope because many foreign entrepreneurs created several factories exporting luxury throughout Europe.
The project uses the strategies of cultural heritage cataloguing as a tool to bring young students closer to their territory to acquire and strengthen that territorial identity necessary to consolidate their belonging to a city, a nation, a European state. The scientific and analytical method of cataloguing has allowed students to interact with the territory in a conscious way in order to develop a sense of identity and belonging to the local territory and in a broader sense to the European community. The presence of non-EU students in some classes it fostered intercultural actions among the young participants by involving the families and the meeting with the local realities. For a tolerant and peaceful coexistence, for an authentic fraternity along the lands, a generous and responsible commitment is needed, of listening and study and the school institution and the local associations are dedicated to it with generosity and professionalism.
This project has the merit of being applied to a school located in a very popular neighbourhood, with a high rate of school dropout and unemployment. Through a project that places young people in activities that put them in relationship with each other and with the community, we have awakened in them the sense of belonging, keeping them away from hardships. To make known to all the citizens of Palermo through events, guided tours and recovery initiatives of the south coast, promoted by the IPSSEOA Pietro Piazza and by the associations adhering to the Community Pact, that part of the city today so degraded and marginalized as to make it difficult, even imagine it, a precious testimony of the productive and elegant city that was Palermo Liberty between the 1800s and 1900s, directly affected by this cultural and artistic movement of European scope. The presence of the Florio family and many foreign entrepreneurs - such as the English families Ingham and Whitaker- contributed, with the creation of numerous entrepreneurial and industrial activities, to the birth of a Palermo Belle Epoque capable of exporting modernity and luxury throughout Europe. Alongside the degraded Palermo of the south coast, the students visited and studied the monumental presences of the Norman period: the Ponte dell'Ammiraglio, the church of S.Giovanni dei Lebbrosi and the Castle and park of Maredolce, an extraordinary example of the transformation of the Islamic ribat into Norman relaxation with a park and lake/fishpond in the center of which an islet emerged for the delight of the king and the court.
With the "Catalogue" project, we have put in the center the student who has related to the territory to the point of building his own territorial identity just as indicated by the Faro Convention Association. The involvement of local community members was one of the most important indicators as the revitalization of the urban heritage requires interaction with the territory and processing of cognitive parameters: let's take Agrumaria Corleone for example. This industry and the historical information provided by the family has interested young people who have registered the business up to a new production site. The pupils interviewed the elderly entrepreneur and produced a video which was inserted in a digital report together with the interview they produced. The material that the current entrepreneur Corleone has provided us has allowed us to deepen the profile and have a trace of a century-long historical journey. We have been able to go through the production process starting from 1890, that is, from when production was entirely entrusted to the hands of the workers, up to the present day when machines have assumed a decisive role in industrial production.

This project has presented special potential that places it among the best teaching strategies to promote knowledge and study of the territory. The "Catalogare… in Piazza" project saw the synergy of several local organizations involved in the training of young people and in the protection of cultural heritage, allowing for the implementation of the European guidelines for educational and pedagogical orientation. Catalogue card in compliance with the ICCD card also adopted in educational projects of the BCA Sicilia Department can be replicated both in school and university contexts. With the cataloguing activity, the students analysed Arab-Norman monuments and industries from the early 1900s. They studied the maps and the evolution of the territories, they understood that the environment must be treated as if it were a creature, with love and respect. They understood how close to our present the history of Europe is: they studied how a king of the Hohenstaufen dynasty was able to reign on our island of Sicily, uniting, in peace, very different peoples. They were able to see how technology can change the world and how important it is for them to use it correctly. They have learned that the earth must be respected and not violated because it does not belong to us but to the generations to come. The pupils interviewed the elderly entrepreneur and produced a video which was inserted in a digital report together with the interview they produced. We have been able to go through the production process starting from 1890, that is, from when production was entirely entrusted to the hands of the workers, up to the present day when machines have assumed a decisive role in industrial production.
The project has the merit of uniting the community with its ancient and recent history, but also the possibility of being re-proposed in any context. This project has presented special potential that places it among the best teaching strategies to promote knowledge and study of the territory. The cataloguing process is intended as a cognitive path through a scientific and analytic method. The cataloguing methodology can be replicated, with the appropriate simplifications at the various school levels, from primary school to high school of various specializations, depending on age and school level. The complexity of the discipline naturally also lends itself to a university course. Providing adequate tools for the training of teachers and students on specific skills in the Cultural Heritage sector and in particular on cataloguing and its methodologies for compiling the A-Architecture form in a simplified version for educational use has made it possible to achieve, at various levels, the following objectives:
• encourage the use of specific and up-to-date technical vocabulary;
. develop the ability to read, understand and analyse the monuments and buildings examined;
• transmit a correct cataloguing methodology for the creation of cultural heritage catalogue cards;
• contribute to the guidance and professional training of young people;
• promote environmental education, sustainable development and protection of the environmental, historical-architectural and food and wine heritage;
• promote awareness of the issue of citizenship as a mechanism of inclusion in society and its related components: belonging (status and identity), rights and duties and participation;
• promote digital citizenship education.
The cataloguing project involved the participants both through the training of teachers who have acquired skills useful for teaching and full operation in the sector of cataloguing the catalogued architectural heritage and through activities and workshops aimed at students on cataloguing methodologies. The A-ARCHITECTURE form of the ICCD (Central Institute for Documentation Cataloguing of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage) elaborated in the school version, but in compliance with the ICCD standards, guided the students to:
- recognize the building typologies, the geometric dimensions, the materials and the techniques used;
- identify the territorial location, the chronology/year of construction, the author and the client and the cultural environment;
- describe the state of conservation and any restoration work;
- collect historical information for a correct reading of the property and its historical-cultural context;
- define current and historical use
- identify critical issues in relation to use and in relation to the territory.
The cataloguing of industrial archeology structures, aimed at undergraduate students, offered not only the possibility of identifying the characteristics of productive buildings, their qualities and criticalities in relation to the territory, but above all to discover and know, through the still existing testimonies the industrial history of our city, made up of a myriad of productive realities, often of an artisanal nature, which made the city of Palermo flourishing in its recent past (between 1860 and 1950 in Palermo there were more than 300 factories) and that today's citizens have an obligation to defend and protect by innovatively evaluating the approach for a new functional destination of those spaces, in relation to the modern technological uses that contemporary strategies can offer.
The common thread has always been the Mediterranean, from the beginning of our formative journey when we ideally travelled the route of the Phoenicians, the foundation of our city and exchanges with all of Europe, up to our century and the goals that modernity suggests. From here the three great monotheistic religions and the wide variety of languages, cultures, human contacts and migrations take their cue. The use of a scientific method in which each data has initiated a cognitive investigation and an objective verification, has allowed a work of meticulous interdisciplinary relationship. At an educational level, we have successfully started from the cultural and environmental heritage closest to the experience of the boy to give him a tangible example of the concept of heritage, not only to the material one, but also the immaterial one. This made it possible to activate an important evolutionary phase of territorial identity to make acquire the learner that sense of belonging that is important for his maturity. Each analytical field of the cataloguing form is verified and described and/or repeated until exhaust the typological components: if we talk about horizons, every single horizon of an artifact that presents diversifications is reported separately, and so for each component, if it represents different types. This investigation leads to verify, measure, photograph and draw, but also report on bibliography and sitography, consulting among students and comparing the data achieved or the difficulties faced. While the student "detects" we give, he/she "reveals" to her awareness and that reference and territorial identity is formed aim and objective of the whole project. The “Catalogare in Piazza” project has the merit of motivating and rewarding the effort of all the young people involved thanks to the publication of a paper and digital manual that translates the effort and commitment of young people into a reality for the entire Ipsseoa Institute Pietro Piazza.
The “Catalogare in Piazza” project was born as a result of a community agreement between public institution and some local associations of the 2nd district of the municipality of Palermo called “Patto di Comunità” with the aim of:
- Design and implementation of continuous training activities and organization of events with reference to local issues and the field of lifelong learning
- Work in synergy with local Public Bodies and Associations.
- Provision of equipment, technological environments, IT and multimedia laboratories for the common goal of stimulating intellectual and operational curiosity about environmental and local issues in male and female students
- Dissemination within the school context through publicity measures and dissemination of the results achieved.
The “Catalogare in Piazza” project has the merit of motivating and rewarding the effort of all the young people involved thanks to the publication of a paper and digital manual that translates the effort and commitment of young people into a reality for the entire Ipsseoa Institute "Pietro Piazza”. The dissemination of the results achieved was carried out through a closing day-seminar of the project with dissemination and presentation of the activities carried out on social networks, broadcasters and local periodicals, in order to raise awareness among families and citizens as a whole. A great goal if we think that one of the causes of early school leaving is precisely the absence of identity, the absence of a close link with one's environment and with the territory. The protection of the territory and its protection have been the subject of cultural, social and political study. The study and the documentation produced is the first act of safeguarding above all through the means of cataloguing which testifies to the facts and historical periods that interest it, as well as the state of conservation.
The didactic methodology of cataloguing certainly falls within the strategies of Global Education. Digitization is not only a mediation tool for cultural purposes, but an evolutionary moment towards a historical dimension of the digital age from which a new phase of social dimension will emerge. The formula of global education applied to our project has allowed us to obtain an overview of all the important points, namely: Solidarity Education, Human Rights Education, Development Education Sustainable, Peace Education, Intercultural Education. Investing in Global Citizenship Education is therefore a necessary goal for the Millennium.
