  • Description of the initiative
Introductory summer course to the science of biomimicry and the principles of bio-inspired design to innovate in creative processes and design new realities.
The BIODESIGN summer course is an immersive learning program surrounded by Nature, in the Redes Natural Park, in Asturias.
Through different training capsules we will understand what biomimicry is, what its applications are and its work methodology.
We will learn to look at Nature with curiosity and from creative experimentation to find alternatives in the design processes. Taking Nature as a model makes us rethink and rethink the future of design, through alternatives to traditional production processes. Biodesign is a 2week experience for professionals and students who want to improve their creative processes by acquiring skills to transform the observation of Nature into prototypes through digital and artisan manufacturing techniques. The biomimetic practice and bioinspiration is an innovative starting point to generate alternative and sustainable designs.
Our learning programs are developed through two complementary approaches, an introduction focused on publicizing the science of biomimicry and its application through a methodology, and a second part where the knowledge acquired is applied through manufacturing tools.
This allows a deeper knowledge, taking the student on a journey from experiential learning in the middle of Nature, through the development of a biomimetic idea, to the final prototyping. WHY LOOK AT NATURE? Humanity must face an important self-transformation and change its relationship with Nature, through a greater social and ecological awareness. Design is a powerful tool to carry out this transformation, which is why we propose environments for experimentation, looking for narratives that suggest a better future. A new way of thinking about creation processes, innovating in solving design challenges in a sustainable, circular and regenerative way, using Nature as a guide.

BIODESIGN is aimed at those explorers who want to lead transformation projects, with a global and interdisciplinary vision, taking into account the bases of sustainable development.
Students and professionals who have concerns and interest in integrating new methodologies in the creation and execution of projects from all creative disciplines, especially those related to design, architecture, product and furniture design, graphic design, engineering, jewelry, fashion design and art.

The BIODESIGN summer course is taught at the Biomimetic Laboratory located in the small town of Ladines, a rural environment in direct contact with Nature in the Redes Natural Park. Ladines is one of those mountain villages that remain unchanged over time, maintaining its vernacular architecture.
The council of Sobrescobio was awarded in 2009 with the Prince of Asturias award for the exemplary town.

The Redes natural space is located in Asturias, in the north of Spain. It is a protected natural environment that was declared a Natural Park in 1996 and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2001, in which the vegetation is dominated by beech and oak forest formations, which make it the ideal place to enjoy inspiring places to relax, read, draw or just rest.
Through the various activities that we carry out in the Laboratory, we want to promote knowledge of the Park and its natural and cultural values, in an open and wild laboratory, where you can feel and experience the secrets and superpowers of Nature.
Design, like other sectors, must direct its gaze towards a more sustainable future, exercising the profession from the care and respect for the planet. One of the great challenges of the design sector would be to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), trying to minimize the impact of the work created on the environment and responding to the social, material and energy challenges facing humanity. In addition to the projects developed, you can also contribute, through design, to sustainable development through social awareness. We believe that in order to move towards ecologically sustainable societies, the first step is to make people aware of the problems and consequences generated by our current demands and consumption dynamics. As consumers, we are the problem and also the solution, since we have the power to change our way of consuming and stop the waste and waste that we generate. Humanity must face an important self-transformation and change its relationship with Nature, through greater social and ecological awareness, and with the creation of the BIOMIMETICS LABORATORY we propose and defend that through design we can contribute creatively and innovatively towards this change. The idea of creating the LABORATORIO BIOMIMÉTICO arises from the commitment to the environment, with the aim of working in the Redes Natural Park to create bio-inspired, sustainable and innovative design solutions, discovering and learning from the environment. The natural area of Redes, declared a Natural Park in 1996 and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2001, has magnificent natural and cultural values, the possibilities of which make it the perfect enclave to establish the location of the BIOMIMETICS LABORATORY, whose activity they make it compatible with the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and the generic diversity of the place.
As creatives and technicians, we are interested in teaching the process of transforming biological strategies found to be of interest, into sustainable implementations and successful technological innovations. Through SummerLab Biodesign course, Nature can help us create a new type of design, more sustainable and capable of adapting and interacting with its environment, just as organisms in the natural world do. At the BIOMIMETICS LABORATORY we will work to offer the lessons of the best known adviser, who has 3.8 billion years of experience and an innumerable amount of successful designs, strategies and processes around the world: Nature. Through the different services offered, we want to promote knowledge of the Park and its natural and cultural values, at the same time that we show what biomimicry is in an open and wild laboratory, where you can feel and experience some of Nature's superpowers.

At BIODESIGN we have selected several experimental training capsules, in which you will be able to work on the intersection between animal and plant physiology, design, the creation of materials and digital manufacturing. But we will also learn about traditional crafts and ways of doing things that offer us the wisdom of the passage of time. The capsules are made up of workshops that are intertwined, the knowledge acquired in each one can be used in the following ones, thus promoting creativity in the projects developed by the participants. BIODESIGN offers specific tools for students to develop projects inspired by Nature, supported by a set of technical, aesthetic and conceptual skills that will help them when designing near futures. The 2022 edition had the participation of people from national and international territory: Barcelona, Mallorca, Madrid, Zaragoza, Logroño, Pamplona, Porto, Guimarães and Minho (Portugal). The professional profiles were mainly secondary school and university teachers, and also designers, architects, craftsmen, engineers, artists
The SummerLab BioDesign summer course experience is a unique experience, in an environment with great cultural, ethnographic and natural heritage. Away from university campuses and technology parks, participants learn new creation methodologies (design and manufacturing) in direct contact with the teachings that Nature offers, while interacting with the local people and getting to know their customs and traditions. , valuing all the wealth of the Parque de Redes and specifically the council of Sobrescobio.

At Laboratorio Biomimético we have a network of suppliers and collaborators in the environment that allows us to offer accommodation, meals and complementary activities.

BIOMIMÉTICO LABORATORY is an innovative business initiative, committed to local development, capable of generating business with suppliers of Sobrescobio and its immediate environment; and to attract professionals and students to work, train, investigate, discover and enjoy the Redes Natural Park. Biomimetic Laboratory offers solutions to a market that increasingly seeks and demands specialized design services in sustainability and bio-inspiration as a way of achieving business or educational innovation, from reconnecting with Nature.
A professional bet of a woman, who together with her partner decide to start a family in the town of Ladines. Now, her two children, ages 6 and 2, go to school and to the nursery in the area. A clear example that contributes positively to alleviate the serious problem of rural depopulation.
Undoubtedly, the Sobrescobio environment has allowed the creation of the first biomimetic laboratory in the middle of Nature, allowing immersion and direct contact with the natural world, promoting knowledge and conservation of the Biosphere Reserve in which Ladines is located. An attractive initiative that is generating new opportunities at a national and international level, among which would be the creation of specialized networks for the exchange of experiences and biomimetic knowledge or the development of cooperation proposals for sustainable management of resources. A determined commitment to situate and identify the Redes Natural Park on the international scene as an example of sustainable innovation in matters of bio-inspired design, through the observation and appreciation of its biodiversity, connection and respect, and the strengthening of culture and identity.
In addition, this project represents a new type of economic initiative linked to tourist activity with low environmental impact and responsible consumption, as added value and an opportunity for success, in a way that is respectful of the Park's social, natural and cultural environment. Thus, a new type of scientific and sustainable tourism is proposed, responsible and with less environmental impact than conventional tourism, protecting and enhancing the Natural Heritage of the environment through various training, interpretation and scientific dissemination programs. All this with the aim of understanding to appreciate the biodiversity of the area, trying to awaken in users feelings of connection, closeness and respect for the environment, strengthening the culture and identity of Redes.
BIOMIMICRY LABORATORY was born with an important global vision, which allows it to attract international talent to rural areas, as reflected in the portfolio of speakers and students who have enjoyed the experience of the 2022 edition.
At BIODESIGN we have selected several experimental training capsules, in which you will be able to work on the intersection between animal and plant physiology, design, the creation of materials and digital manufacturing.

The capsules are made up of workshops that are intertwined, the knowledge acquired in each one can be used in the following ones, thus promoting creativity in the projects developed by the participants.
Several participants from cities all over Spain and Portugal, enjoying and learning in Ladines for 14 days, weaving new personal and professional connections, and dispersing the seed of bio-inspiration as a form of innovation in creative and educational processes.
The programming of the 2022 edition was planned as the combination of two independent and complementary courses, with a total duration of two weeks. Each course is structured over 7 days according to different training capsules and complementary activities, connecting various disciplines and creating experiential and practical learning. The training capsules dedicated to the understanding of the biomimetic methodology are common to the two teaching programs, adapted to the teachings of each week.
Week 1 BioMateriality: from July 11 to 17, 2022: learning biomaterial manufacturing techniques, natural dyes and folding techniques, in a low-tech way, based on how Nature manufactures its materials, generates structures and produces the colour.
Week 2 BioDigitalization: from July 18 to 24, 2022: more technological, and based on how Nature designs, it deals with the understanding of natural shapes and patterns, through learning generative design and additive and subtractive digital manufacturing.
All of this motivates us to continue in 2023, turning it into a unique, high-level immersive training space, an international benchmark in the field and a "must-see".

In addition to the SummerLab Biodesign educational program, in 2022 other teaching initiatives have been carried out, such as the Lichen Weekend scientific outreach sessions around the lichens of the Redes Natural Park, the scientific illustration course, courses on biomaterials, collaborations with residences arts (EMAP), family activities and children's workshops.
The work methodology of the BIOMIMETICS LABORATORY is proving to be of interest not only in Spain but also in other countries such as Portugal, Italy or the United Kingdom, through relations with universities or research centers in these places such as: Universidade do Minho, Universidade do Porto , University College London (UCL), FabLab Turin. An interest that goes beyond participating in these immersive training experiences, being able to develop in the near future a consultancy and advisory work for the implementation of similar initiatives in these centers and the consolidation of an exchange of students and teachers through collaboration agreements that allow for research and creation residency programs and the development of specific courses for each group.
Thus, our future expectations for the actions proposed here would be:
    • Convert SummerLab BIODESING into an international reference meeting for university students, professionals and teachers who wish to lead the paradigm shift towards a type of bio-inspired future.
    • Replicate the SummerLab initiative to make it possible at other times of the year and turn this experience into a benchmark for biomimetic methodology, as a type of cultural and scientific tourism that complements and goes beyond the existing rural tourism in the Redes Natural Park.
