  • Basic information
A toy car building kit for empty cartons
A toy car that provokes creativity is sustainable- lasts a lifetime and can be built again and again
It is a remote control toy car building kit for children that replaces the need to buy several toy cars since the car can be built again and again. It can be used to build cars out of different food packages that would otherwise be thrown away. If a child builds the body of a car out of a used package, it provokes them to wash it and later recycle it.

  • Description of the concept
It is a remote control toy car building kit for children. The kit provides user with 4 wheels, a battery, magnets and a remote control. All the user has to to is to find a material to build the body of the car and fix it to the wheels using magnets provided in the kit. The idea of the concept is that it would replace the need to buy several toy cars with different looks. Instead, you can buy this one kit and reconstruct it when you feel like it. This kind of building develops children' s creativity, constructional thinking and provokes free play which is an important part of childhood.
The main point is that you could build the body of the car out of simple household materials, i.e. milk or yoghurt cartons, plastic bottles or simple cardboard boxes. It would make children look at the world from a different viewpoint: what else can I use to build my car? It would make them care more about packages and taking care of them after use. It would provoke them to wash them, recognize them and after building also recycle them correctly.
The kit could be sold or given for free in exchange for recycling trash correctly. It should be a collaboration with the local packaging productions.

A toy car building kit is more sustainable than owning several different toy cars that end up sitting on the shelf when they are older. The building kit provokes thinking about using the same things over and over again instead of buyng new ones all the time.
It is also important to educate children about recycling trash from a very young age and my toy car building kit enables that.
Playing with toy cars in general is extremely beneficial for children. During play, they help to develop children's tactile skills, orientation in space and cause-reaction competence. When you crash your toy car against a wall, you know that you won't to that again. You learn from experience. Play is like working for children. Extremely important part of their life.
When something happens in play, children take that experience to their real life as well.
Since the toy car kit would only consist of parts, it makes children understand that everything is in their own hands. When they want to make something cool an pretty, they themselves have all the power to build a car exactly like they want. It does not matter how much money you have, it only matters how dedicated you are to build cool stuff: in play or in real life later.
When children actually start building car bodies out of household materials, they will learn, what they are like, how to treat them, how to wash and recycle them. They would start acknowledging the world as it as and its current situation with waste pollution and huge trash mills. Maybe they will be the generation that would fix it when they are already raised with acceptable knowledge about it.
The project was designed at Estonian Academy of Arts as a school project on my first year of studies there. There were no other stakeholders involved. Just me, myself and I with some help from a teacher.
The concept consists of knowledge about free play, importance of playing with remote control cars and knowledge about the construction of a remote control toy car. The car building kit would need some help from an engineer since it is at prototype level right now.
A mixture of theoretical knowledge and constructions and building is very cool, when it can create value to children' s development.
My remote control toy car building kit is compatible with different food cartons sold at grocery stores and the car itself could be sold right next to milk and yoghurt to educate children more about waste recycling and using things overall longer and more than one time.
When children learn to build their own toy car, they would become more interested in building other stuff themselves as well. They would learn that something made by yourself is much more valuable than anything store bought.
When Estonian children would start building toy cars out of old food cartons, we could be able to start collecting them separately from other packages and therefore recycle them more efficiently. We could be an example for the rest of the world.
