Ecocoon - a case study on ecocentric creative space design
Ecoccon is a case study on ecocentric creative space design aiming to optimise the experience for creators in comparison to conventional non-environment room. Incorporating local artisan craftsmanship pairing up with scientific research, it will set an example to cultivate multi-disciplinary projects / serendipity in the art and science field.

  • Description of the concept
Extensive research has been done over the years in room acoustics by optimising the system to get the “vocal sound” , often the space is covered with absorption panels made with mineral wool, maximising absorption coefficient (α=1) across all octave bands, alternatively there is the blackbird studio in Nashville Tennessee with Ambechoic approach , disorientating on the perceptual visual cue with our internal comparator of how the space “should'' sound like. Optimising the experience, on the other hand, has been brought up lately in the hot topic of the immersive audio field, yet in the physical domain it’s seldomly raised. The purpose of this case study is on ecocentric creative space design, utilising gas (air cavity) , liquid, and solid in their natural form, harnessing their physical properties (mass, stiffness, damping factor) to act as the structural membrane layers of the space, namely with mycelium, plants and algae. Objective measurements on its acoustics properties in situ / in compliance with standards will be conducted and subjective quantifiers on ecocentric design with Artist in Residence in comparison to a conventional non-environment creative space will be provided, embark future discussions on viability of ecocentric creative spaces and involvements with other disciplines where art meets science. An exploratory aim will evaluate whether or not such design is feasible and to what degree with potential collaborators. With regard to expected outcomes, this proposal will evaluate whether such design can optimise the experience for creators and the significance of ecocentric creative space design in comparison to conventional adsorption based non-environment room to achieve better creative outcome . These data will have a positive impact by providing a pragmatic example of incorporating ecocentric principles into domestic / creative space design .

    Creative Space Design case study
    Cradle to Cradle
Primary Aim: To determine if ecocentric design optimises the experience and leads to potential creative outcome. Primary hypothesis: Symbiosis with nature will trigger serendipity and get the creative juice flowing
Secondary Aim: As an example to cultivate multi-disciplinary projects / serendipity in the art and science field.
Exploratory Aim: To determine to what degree is legible of sustainable ecocentric creative space design
As included in the proposal, the visual speaks for itself.
To conduct subjective measurement, Artist in Residence will open to creators regardless of color, age, gender, nationality, sexuality.
There will be no application fee and a travel subsidy will be provided.

Workshops/session will be provided to talk about the process, additionally serve as art installation open to public.
I hope citizens and creators will reevaluate their domestic / creative spaces and start implement their own take on ecocentric principles
    - Grant / Funding agencies associate with eccentric design and supporting art development will boost brand image.
    - (Pro Audio) Company interested for product placement
    - Museum / Collective interested taking ownership afterwards as to host semi-permanent residencies.
-Researchers get paid and something to work on within Ecocoon
-Artist get paid and exhibit their craftsmanship
-Creators don't get paid but get the space for free to produce creative outcome and host a workshop / concert / exhibition in return.
-Workshops/session will be provided to talk about the process, additionally serve as art installation open to public engagement
The focus is mostly in art, acoustics and architecture, depends on outreach researchers topics could be involving

Biology - How does continuous exposure to high acoustic load affect algae , fungi and plants.
Psychology / Neuroscience - Does access to higher doses of oxygen in air & greenery sparks creativity ?
Electrical Engineering - Possibility on partially bio-battery powered creative space
Acoustics - Is air absorption efficient in higher octave bands negligible in acoustically treated small / domestic orientations ?
    Architecture - Biophilic Design
Makers - show off their craftsmanship

Ecocoon is the candy shop to facilitate collaborations, this experience would hopefully lead to more down the road .
This proposal addresses the main objective of ecocentric design, in lieu of prevalent commercial acoustic treatment practices with mineral wool and foam, accentuating symbiosis with nature is asserted (cradle to cradle), in hopes acoustic practitioners and creators would follow suit to create their own ecocentric designs . Ecocoon has great potential to bring diversity and encourage collaborations in the art and science field. Knowledge transfer is also a potential bi-product of this case study.
Resonating with Japanese concept (一期一会), Ecocoon will be dismantled, split into modular parts (frames / green barrier) and donating as public art / takeover by museum, university or collectives to host residencies after it completes its’ finite life span.

After confirm funding / grant, i will be in talks to interested parties (ie: Leiden University) to figure out the aftermath and logistics associate with it.
Think global, act local. In my limited time here in the Netherlands I'm fascinated how forward thinking the Dutch people are and they are always trying to take it a step further. Souring local materials, manufacturers and talents to launch a case study aim to serve as an example to ecocentric creative space design can lead to discussions and actions globally to rethink the significance of acoustics in our daily life.
