    Ser+Peculiar aims to be a competent tool to combat school failure/dropout and promote mental health
    In Portugal, there has been an increase in school failure and dropout. However, it's not just student's responsibility, but also school community, socio-economic issues and the family environment. In this sense, was born Ser+Peculiar in an attempt to combat this great problem. It is intended to enhance the growth and development of children in their various areas of learning, dignify the role of the teacher and expand the role of the family in continuous growth and promoting mental health.

  • Description of the initiative
    In an increasingly competitive world, where human beings tend to become one-dimensional, it is very important to look at ourselves and take care of ourselves. With regard to children and young people, they need the protection, love, guidance and balance of the triad: family, school community and being itself. In recent years, in Portugal, there has been an increase in school failure and dropout. Thus, responsibility cannot be considered that falls exclusively on the student, but also in the school community, on socio-economic issues and in the family environment. In this sense, Dr. Idalina Almeida created the Ser + Peculiar Project in an attempt to combat this great problem – failure and school dropout. This, is a project developed to help you go further, teach you how to do better. Through a peculiar way of educating, it is intended to enhance the growth and development of children and young people in their various areas of learning, dignify the role of the teacher, honour and expand the role of the family in this process of daily and continuous growth. Four books were developed, suitable for each learning cycle: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Cycles and Secondary. In order to motivate the participants in carrying out all the activities proposed in the books, a digital platform was created, where after registration the students will be able to detail the activities carried out in the book. Through this system, in addition to supervising the results, there will be a points award per chapter that will become a final prize: the mascot of the Ser + Peculiar Project that they built throughout the school year. All school-age children and young people are eligible for the use of The Ser + Peculiar. Motivating and encouraging children and young people in a different and unique way, they remain focused on various subjects that have stimulated them cognitively and rationally. Learn to deal with emotions and give due attention to mental health, we can lead them to school and personal success.

    Sustainability is a constant concern of European society. The rapid squander of natural resources, the impacts that human activity has on ecosystems, the high levels of social inequalities and poverty we face, the lack of corporate management ethics are enemies of a sustainable development model, capable of ensuring future generations the opportunities and quality of life that current generations have. The Project aims to be reference in the area of happy and inclusive education, with the direct interaction between the School Community, Parents and Children of various age groups. The use of new technological tools is a current trend, and the project is also proof of this. The books created will be easily transformed into e-books and the use of the digital platform is a fundamental tool for achieving the objectives, since the participants will register and later detail the activities carried out of each book. Through this system, in addition to the monitorization of results, there will be an award of points per chapter that will become a final prize: the mascot of the Peculiar Being that they built throughout the school year. Participants are encouraged to improve every day, to have critical thinking, to eat better, to be healthier, to learn to live in community. This is a project where children/young people have the same opportunities and can learn, practice and live a better life without compromising the environment.
    Ser + Peculiar Project has well-defined objectives, such as deliver assertive tools to students, parents and teachers for a happy education, for a healthy life at the physical and mental level and boost the personal/professional development.
    The scalability and sustainability of this project is guaranteed with the constant need to update the e-books for each school year, according to the established objectives. The possibility of translation and adaptation for each language and country ensures the territorial sustainability of the project.
    The Ser + Peculiar Project consists of 4 workbooks, thought and designed according to age and needs, where children and young people can significantly improve performance and school success. Its pleasant aesthetics, adequate pedagogical information and sensory stimulation are the main physical characteristics of the books. The Ser + Peculiar Project has a completely innovative philosophy that can be used anywhere, whether at school, at home, in a garden, on the beach... The most important thing is that users feel comfortable and able to perform tasks spontaneously but consciously, regardless of where they are. We have our own establishment in Rio Tinto, Portugal. The Project is used here, which served as a starting point, where children are taught, through dynamic, practical, personalized methods and adapted to their needs and rhythms, contributing decisively to their personal and professional success. This space was designed according to the needs and well-being of its users, according to their ages and difficulties. There are rooms suitable for the development of activities, a multipurpose living room, and offices for individual psychological support. Support structures, such as reception, toilets and an outdoor space of good dimensions and safety conditions, also being thought in accordance with its users. The whole space is accessible to all, since we have an inclusive and integrative philosophy. The decoration of the various spaces was thought in detail and according to the objectives that are intended to be achieved in each of them. Colourful walls, with graffiti, with motivating phrases, with inspiring images, able to take us only by observation. A playful activity is planned where children will paint the walls and give wings to emotions.
    We developed an appealing logo, with colours that transmit life, and inspire all to do better and better. I believe that learning where we feel good, brings several benefits and facilitates learning and consequent success
    Social exclusion is understood to cover forms of non-material deprivation, overcoming the lack of economic resources, such as: the lack of social, political, cultural and psychological resources. According to UNICEF, poverty, exclusion and the limited capacity of schools to overcome restraint and are among the main causes of school failure. Thus, responsibility cannot be considered that falls exclusively on the student, but also in the school community, on socio-economic issues and in the family environment. In this sense, Ser + Peculiar Project is an attempt to combat this great problem.
    This is a project aimed at all school-age children and young people, from the 1st cycle to the secondary (according to the Portuguese public education system). The Ser + Peculiar Project is about learning, respecting, realizing what is emotional intelligence, growing and having confidence in the future.
    The project aims to unconditionally support children/young people, who face a great challenge of how to integrate into 21st century society, very demanding, discriminatory and challenging, mainly by emotional pressure. All participants in our project are treated equally, because we have the door open for everyone!
    Our method was designed to help the school and personal growth of our children/young people by helping parents and teachers in this complex process that is teaching. This is a project, in addition to innovative, of high inclusion. We promote equal education for everyone, identical opportunities and methods capable of improving the child as an individual (cognitive stimulus), but also as a community participant.
    For us, inclusion is a set of attitudes and devices used to ensure that differences in social class, age, education, gender, race and also physical and mental conditions are not barriers to access to education.

    Ser+Peculiar Project was developed to help go further, teach how to do better. Tackling failure and school dropout is the main objective for the creation of this project, with the intention of enhance the growth and development of children and young people in their various areas of learning, dignify the role of the teacher, honour and expand the role of the family in this process of daily and continuous growth. The Ser + Peculiar Project, and its mission to involve the School Community, Parents and Children in a common project, that motivate children and young people to a dynamic and happy academic journey and promote their integration into the community. Without radicalism and in a simple and practical way, this project consists of 4 workbooks where all children and young people of primary and secondary education are beneficiaries and can, through its innovative method, significantly improve performance and school success. The project is developed through the acrostic of the word Peculiar (in Portuguese), each book having eight chapters: P (Perception where we are and where we want to go), E (Escola - School and study), C (Conhecimento - Knowledge), U (Uno - we are all singular and peculiar), L (Liberdade - Freedom, finance and time), I (Intelligence/Mental Health), A (Action) and R (Result). The Ser + Peculiar Project's missions are: To combat school failure/dropout; Minimize social inequalities; Involve the School Community, Parents and Children in a common project; Motivate children and young people to a dynamic and happy academic journey; Combat sedentary lifestyle and digital dependencies; Encourage outdoor activities, feel good about themselves and others; Be able to deal positively with adversity; Have confidence in the future, promoting their mental health.
    I believe that being better is to have more skills to face challenges, deal with difficulties, make the best of our abilities, know how to manage our life and as a consequence... be happier!
    My Ser + Peculiar Project is the result of a few years of research and studies on the effective needs of children and young people, in a world as demanding and discriminatory as ours. Preparing children and young people to be happy and accomplished adults is our priority. The method developed in the project is very simple and is based on filling some more practical fields of life, such as: family activities, food, physical exercise, study, multiple intelligences (particular attention to emotional intelligence), financial literacy, time, reducing the dependencies of information and communication technologies, working personal, academic development and mental health as a whole to lead participants on the path of their dreams and goals is what we have to offer. A program with four books differentiated according to the ages of participants available in physical format and very soon in digital format, which can be used by all students. I have a lot to offer teachers, educators and students.
    This is a pioneering project in Portugal, combining innovative pedagogical methods, with the complement of some more practical fields of life, and psychological follow-up, whenever referenced. We are already in contacts for the internationalization of the project, and with the NEB partnerships will be achieved.
    The easy adaptation to each language and to each education system allows the project to reach the various European countries, and overcome barriers around the world. To this end, we need to contact entities (schools, study support centres, educators, teachers, and so on) from other countries, that share our ideology, in order to transport and adapt the project to the specific needs of each one.
    There are no boundaries for knowledge and teaching. I believe that the Ser + Peculiar Project can help children/young people, educators, parents, teachers and education assistants to fight together to end school failure, ensuring tools to manage emotions of the student and family.
    Dr. Idalina Almeida, psychologist since 2004, with extensive experience in the areas of Health and Education, responsible for the creation of the Peculiar Group, always had a passion for teaching and monitoring the development intellectual and mental of students (children/adolescents).
    Several years of study in various areas such as Health and Education Psychology, Vocational Guidance, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Nutrition have allowed us to perceive cognitive and developmental needs of children and young people, in our day. All over the years, Dr. Idalina worked with several professionals from various fields, always combining psychology with education.
    With its own physical space, since 2011, dedicated to pedagogical support to children and adolescents, has a multidisciplinary, dynamic and diversified work team, with several years of experience in supporting group and/or individual study. A joint work of qualified professionals, have been arousing the interest of their students for their unique development and acquisition of learning, through dynamic methods, practical, personalized and adapted to the needs and pace of each one.
    The availability of various extracurricular activities brings benefits to students in relation to their school performance, and aim at curricular enrichment and through stimulating the development of the physical and aesthetic dimensions of children. Through new experiences and learning that enable the awakening of skills beyond the academic field, children learn and develop skills that are often unknown. The combination of the various areas mentioned, such as psychology, education, nutrition, sports, physical and mental health, dance, physical fitness, allowed to identify deficiencies and enumerate benefits for children and young people.
    All the knowledge acquired, by the sharing of experiences, by the hard study and the love for education, led to the culmination of this project - Ser + Peculiar.
    Project consists of 4 workbooks/e-books developed for different age groups, of school age (according to public education in Portugal): 1st cycle (6 and 10 years), 2nd cycle (10 and 12 years), 3rd cycle (12 and 15 years) and Secondary (15 and 18 years).
    Technically it develops through the acrostic of the word Peculiar (in Portuguese), having the book 8 chapters:
    P- Perception: In this chapter there is a brief summary of the developmental indicators, from birth to the particular moment of each Being, in order to understand the goals already achieved and those that are proposed to achieve;
    E – (Escola) School and study: Knowing how to act in the best way to obtain the best results is the purpose of this chapter;
    C – (Conhecimento) Knowledge: Competence and results will allow to design a strategy that in turn will facilitate the process of vocational guidance;
    U - Uno: Work self-love and love for others, in order to improve self-esteem and promote the fight against bullying;
    L – (Liberdade) Freedom, finance and time: Through the implementation of the practical strategies explained, they will have the "map" to achieve the much desired personal and professional success;
    I - Intelligence: gaining knowledge and understanding the multiple intelligences is fundamental to know how to identify and manage life as a whole, in this chapter more attention is given to emotional intelligence, because it is the one that commands feelings and conditions the senses;
    A - Action: Making it happen, scheduling, planning and executing what one wants to achieve is the culmination of all previous points;
    R - Result: Return of the realization of the actions performed. Through monitoring and evaluation, it is possible to perceive and improve the trajectory of the route traced, this will not always be straight, but with persistence and resilience the desired destination will be the product of this operation.
    Talking about innovation is talking about the adoption of the Ser + Perculiar.
    This is an inclusive project capable of reaching everyone. We easily realize that this is a method that can be used by everyone and anywhere. The Ser + Peculiar Project, and its mission to involve the School Community, Parents and Children in a common project, can motivate to a dynamic and happy academic journey, promote mental health (both the child and the family) and encourage integration into the community. The Project can be used anywhere, whether at school, at home, in a garden, even on the beach. There are no physical barriers to using our method and getting positive results.
    From a territorial perspective, the easy access, with books or e-books, allows reaching the most urban areas, such as the most rural areas. This is a pioneering project in Portugal, but we are already in contacts for its internationalization, at an early stage, for African countries with Portuguese official language, helping children who need the most to be happy and grow better. The easy adaptation to each language and to each education system allows the project to reach the various European countries, and overcome barriers around the world.
    Learning is not an exclusive activity of children. Adults and even older people seek a constant search for new subjects and new learning. This project was developed to help go further, through new and peculiar forms of teaching, also promoting new and peculiar forms of learning. This system can be suitable for all age groups, revolutionizing the ability to motivate and teach, through the provision of support and follow-up books (physical and digital format). We intend to create 2 new manuals: Ser + Social – Thought and developed for adults with low levels of education and weak digital skills, the respective book will allow, through computer education, to combat social isolation; and, Ser + Experienced – Aimed at the senior population, this book will provide a more focused learning for your well-being, both at the mental, motor, cognitive level.
    The Project consists of a program with 4 books, where each book corresponds to an age group (according to the Portuguese educational system).
    This project is an attempt to combat greater society problems – failure/school dropout and early degradation of mental health. Through a peculiar way of educating, it is intended to enhance the growth and development of children/young people in their various areas of learning.
    Our mission is: combat school failure, minimize social inequalities, involve parents and children in a common project, motivate children and young people to a dynamic and happy academic journey, deliver assertive tools for happy education to parents and teachers, boost the personal and professional development of children and young people, ensuring tools to manage emotions for a good mental health, both students and family.
    Young people and parents are the main characters of this process, because they will have activities together, each plays its role and in an assertive, dynamic and fun way can achieve the goals they have defined.
    In the books are addressed topics such as: perception (Definition of objectives in several areas such as, family, studies, friends and leisure activities), school (Approach on study methods and their application at different evaluation times), knowledge (Types of knowledge and what its importance in the construction of the human being), uniqueness (Addresses issues such as bullying, the importance of relationships with others and the formation of personality), freedom (Approach to time management and financial literacy), intelligence (emotional, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, body-kinesthesis, intrapersonal, interpersonal and naturalistic intelligence), action (Monthly planning) and results (Monitoring and motivation of the work carried out). As a complement to the books there is a collectible mascot, that will be obtained through the registration and consequent award of points, referring to proposed activities.
    Today's society is modern and challenging.
    Although there is a lot of progress at various levels, such as technology, health, sustainability, environment, among others, socio-economic setbacks have disaggregated modern societies, increasing levels of inequalities and social exclusion. Social exclusion covers forms of non-material deprivation, overcoming the lack of economic resources, including the lack of social, political, cultural and psychological resources, which increase the vulnerability of the most exposed social groups.
    The education has also been evolving, but the use of traditional methods, often obsolete, discourages children and young people. The lack of innovative teaching methods associated with socio-economic factors and unstable family environments, are nowadays, at the heart of school failure and dropout. This is a serious global problem that affects numerous European countries.
    On the other hand, with the pandemic that has been experienced, social isolation has caused numerous mental health problems, even in the younger ones. A problem, often overlooked, but one that must be faced.
    This, is a project developed to help go further, teach how to do better. Through a peculiar way of educating, it is intended to enhance the growth and development of children and young people in their various areas of learning, dignify the role of the teacher, ensure emotional control tools, honour and expand the role of the family in this process of daily and continuous growth. Ensuring the fight against sedentary lifestyle/digital dependencies, promoting outdoor activities, results in excellent mental health of all stakeholders.
    There are no physical barriers to using our method and getting positive results. This is a pioneering project in Portugal, but we are already in contact for its internationalization. The easy adaptation to each language and education system allows the project to reach the various European countries, and overcome barriers around world.
    Giving priority to the places and people who need it most, is a perfect definition for the Ser + Peculiar Project.
    At this stage, we have been developing the Ser + Peculiar method directly in children and young people, users of our Study and Pedagogical Support Center – Mente Peculiar (Peculiar Mind).
    We arouse the interest of our students for their unique development and acquisition of learning, through dynamic, practical methods, personalized and adapted to the needs and rhythm of each student - the Method Being + Peculiar. In this sense, we have been contributing decisively to their personal and professional success. With the growth of the Ser + Peculiar Project, throughout our country (Portugal) we will be able to reach more and more children, who need to be guided so that their future can be brighter and successful.
    It is a huge asset to work with those who complement us, because cooperating forces us to work outside the sphere of the entity itself/person, in a logic of open innovation, taking advantage of knowledge and experience. We privilege collaborative action, through networking, establishing partnerships and deepening contacts. In this way, we can get further and further and help more and more children. A partnership that we have established directly with the Ser + Peculiar Project is with the Portuguese institution Centro Social de Soutelo, and others are in negotiation.
    With the territorial growth of the project, in the North of Portugal, we anticipate, by the end of 2023, to include at least 350 children and young people in Ser + Peculiar, helping in its access and consequent school performance, considering only the partnerships carried out. Reaching directly schools and study support centres, across the country the numbers tend to multiply considerably. Looking ahead, the sustainability of our project's growth is guaranteed, as many children and young people have always needed help and encouragement to achieve good levels of curriculum outcomes
    The development of a European sustainability skills framework is one of the policy actions enshrined in the European Ecological Pact as a catalyst for promoting learning about environmental sustainability in the European Union. There are several challenges that must be addressed and real objectives that are intended to be achieved, working together, among all EU countries.
    Ser + Peculiar Project is an example of innovation and sustainability, and will directly contribute to the development of new competences, especially in the context of the European competence framework on sustainability, such as:
    • Incorporate sustainability values - Valuing sustainability, supporting equity and promoting nature;
    • Integrating complexity into sustainability - Our method encourages critical thinking as a way to solve problems such as environmental and sustainability issues
    • Action for sustainability - act in groups, in favor of change, after identifying the individual potentials of each participant to change the community
    • Predicting and working for a more sustainable future - Imagining alternative scenarios, understanding real sustainability challenges and sharing ideas.
    This project will have a major impact on skills, especially the younger ones, which are the future of our Community Europe, developing skills, arousing interests and sowing a sustainable spirit.
