  • Description of the initiative
    Traiettorie Urbane is three-years integrated initiative that aims to promote social growth and educational opportunities for girls and boys between 11-17 years old towards the engagement of educational communities of six neighborhoods of Palermo.The educational approach is based on culture and sport as key elements to foster youthful protagonism and the field of action refers mainly to the extra school (informal)educational “space” even if the partnership with local schools remains fundamental to build a complementary educational offer.
    The urban public space and its regeneration is central to this initiative.Starting from two physical symbolic places of the city (regenerated in last years and now devoted to social impact through creative practices and disciplines) the initiative acts as a widespread community centre along two urban axes.The importance of living and cross the urban spaces for teenagers’ development designs the actions of engagement by the experimentation of new connections between bordering but separated neighborhoods.All engaged communities could benefit from a new use of public space and from the new set of cultural and sport activities that happen.
    The goal of the initiative is to increase teenagers’ opportunities of awareness, self-determination and participation to public life and active citizenship to find a new vision of their possible future and project of life.The pillar of participation,that sport and culture can generate,is a right expressed at the 12 art. ONU Convention on the Rights of the Child.A need,common to the two urban axes, is the presence of free spaces and free cultural,sport and creative activities for teenagers.At the same time,the initiative aims to reinforce the local network of educational actors,public institutions, and third sector to build together a path of local sustainable future that, starting from the legacy of this project,influence policy making processes and co-design of public services, skills and networks
    youth engagement
    urban social links/connections
    educational poverty
    multistakeholder partnership
    territorial sustainable and inclusive development
    The project aims to perceive sustainability in terms of:
    - long term and inclusive territorial development approach
    - Citizenship active participation
    - Multistakeholder partnership
    - Rethinking and transformation of the urban public space concept and use
    Even if environmental sustainability is not the direct focus of this initiative, all the elements mentioned above contribute or, better, represent the fundamental pillars to develop a collective awareness about environment respect and care as preliminary condition of territorial development and collective heritage to preserve and value in a broader concept of belonging territory and community.
    The co-design and use of public spaces is based on sustainable principles.
    Moreover, green thinking and sustainable development are cross educational approaches that characterize the entire initiative.
    Examples ff educational practices and actions of “Traiettorie Urbane” fostering sustainability among new generations:
    - Co-design of a low environmental impact urban signage, for public and social spaces involved in the initiative, that allows to recognize paths that cross neighborhoods and their social function (output: 2 systems of urban signage);
    - Hiking in urban naturalistic areas, social sailing and education to the culture of sea.
    Culture and creative practices are at the base of this initiative as a preeminent field of engagement for teenagers. Save the Children designed a multidimensional index of educational poverty composed by 14 indicators and 7 of them refers to the exposition (or not) to cultural opportunities for youth.
    Cultural activities that characterize the initiative are conceived as occasion to allow sociality, to discover new disciplines and to share the importance of rules, solidarity and team working fighting individualism and prevarication.
    Traiettorie Urbane includes actions focused on the creation of a sense of belonging between young and their territory. Starting from mapping, reporting and other evidences, boys and girls can observe, know more, and, especially, tell from their specific perspective, about “their” environment, their roots and their dreams.
    - Boys and girls participate to collective movies production telling about the life in neighborhoods and location guides for film makers that show locations opportunities in the city (output: 2 collective movies and 1 location guide)
    - Engaged teenagers participate to project design and management of a new cultural offer in their neighborhoods as:
    • a peer festival and “young” versions of existing local cultural festivals
    • artistic residencies in neighborhoods
    • other cultural events
    (Output: at least 4 group of engaged young) 40 events, 3 editions of a storytelling festival, 6 artistic residences)
    Other extra-school activities: orienteering by an original escape room format, youth participatory paths, paces for study…)
    All the initiative Traiettorie Urbane is focused on the goal of young inclusion and participation throughout a co-design approach allowing teenagers’ protagonism. They are directly engaged in decisional processes about contents and focus of activities they participate as also for what concerns different ways of development and management of them.All the activities of this initiative are free for young and, moreover, in some cases they can directly manage the budget for their implementation (for example to realize a festival) in order to acquire specific skills about economic sustainability.We believe that it stimulates younger to become an active part of the community.An example of young protagonism refer to the line of activity Play your space devoted to define a playful interaction with urban spaces based on sport.First of all, engaged teenagers are driven to decide which public spaces are the most adapt to community challenges,their need of regeneration, and then they could design new collaborative ways and rules for the shared use of this spaces and relative managing processes. This activity stimulates the interaction with neighborhood communities.(Output: Urban game for shared regeneration of spaces by playground design, playful activities and events promoted by teens for teens).
    Traiettorie Urbane born as an educational project acting in the informal education sphere.It is complementary to the school education in a logic of cooperation with schools.Specific actions refer to teachers training on skills to foster participative approach and multidisciplinary orientation of students.Another important goal of the initiative refers to the definition of a shared policy and processes to manage child and teens abuses (child-safeguarding policy) considering a team work among all subjects of the educational community.Another level of inclusion focused on the progressive integration of new competences between more structured actors and third sector younger realities
    The initiative generates a network able to offer a broad and coordinated educational proposal and extracurricular activities, answering to needs of younger - especially those one more disadvantaged - and reinforcing their attitude to active citizenship and awareness about different opportunities for their future. Neighborhoods affected by this initiative presents high levels of school dropout, cultural, educational and social poverty, the presence of organized crime, violence, not managed immigration and other structural problems that influence the attitude of younger (11 – 17 years old) to imagine and experiment different paths of life, compared with those of their familiar contexts.
    Thanks to activities of communication and local advocacy they could have the opportunity to present their opinions and experiment their role for the change of territories where they live.
    Moreover, the initiative is based on the shared use of public spaces at disposal of civil society, in a context where private prevarication is a custom. This change of vision impacts on the venues directly engaged, but it could impact also in the field of urban planning policies.

    Cultural and sport sectors become part of a new conception od the informal educational approach and, together with the system of child abuse prevention that the initiative aims to develop, represent key pillars to reform public educative and youth policies in the direction to a more multidisciplinary and sustainable vision.

    The engagement of younger means the engagement of all the educational community and produces, two type of effects:
    The engagement of families and more in general adults
    A systemic approach to local challenges that directly engage the third sector in a more structured cooperation among NGO and with the local administration departments (output: continuous learning, shared policies and long term planning, new business model for social services).
    The initiative has been conceived by Fondazione EOS (that also economically support the project),Clac ETS e Museo Mare Memoria Viva that represent the coordination body.Project also benefit from the economic support of Impresa Social Con I Bambini.Con i Bambini is a non-profit organisation wholly-owned subsidiary of the CON IL SUD Foundation.The Fund was created in 2016 in collaboration with ACRI (an organisation representing foundations of banking origin), the Italian Government, and The National Forum of Organisations in the Third Sector.It supports projects intended to remove economic, social, and cultural obstacles for children and youth and to allow full advantage of the educational processes. Fondazione Eos is the corporate foundation of Edison Spa, an energetic company, and its mission contributes to the creation of social value in the communities where Edison operates, substantiating its role as the leader of an inclusive and responsible energy transition.Clac and MMV are the organisations linked to the two physical venues (Cantieri Culturali ZIZA e Museo MMV) acting as safe and innovative spaces to experiment activities as also as propeller centers among the two urban axes of the initiative. The initiative was also sponsored by ASviS (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS)) and by the UN Global Compact Network Italy (UNGCN Italy)
    From this fist nucleus, Traiettorie urbane engage other third sector organizations among the six neighborhoods that are experts in education, inclusion and social innovation.Moreover, the project engages the public administration at local level, especially the municipality office of the guarantor of the rights of childhood and adolescence and the educational department with the engagement as partner of some schools. The communication of the initiative is managed by a social entrerprise, partner of the project.The system of partnership is open to other organizations to spread the set of skills, competences and service
    The initiative born thanks to an holistic approach that mix together in a logic of complementariety different knowledge fields as pedagogy, sociology, psicology, urban planning, education, arts and culture, sport (intended not just for what concerns technical perspective but especially considering the embedded social values), project management, strategic social business modeling, policy making, social communication, gamification competences, social and welfare services, social impact evaluation, legal skills.

    The different partners bring specific competences that assure the quality of each action and, at the same time, increase the general value of the initiative.

    Sustainable development approach and specific competences are considered as cross competences applicated to all the initiative design and implementation.

    Representatives interact in the design of activities and actions as also at Community Lab level and at monitoring and evaluation level in order to develop a strategic evaluation of the impact of the project and the condition of its sustainability over time.

    In a general perspective, the initiative aims to reinforce the informal educational offer in interested urban contexts giving to engaged boys and girls the opportunity to experiment and learn in very different cultural venues, spaces and models as compared to familiar networks (social and cultural poverty) and formal space of learning (lack of flexibility and inclusiveness).

    The holistic approach is also reflected in the set of skills that teens can acquire. The focus is on those soft cross functional skills which allow to develop social intelligence, empathy, broader vision approach, team working and inclusive attitude.
    The innovative character of Traiettorie Urbane is the systhemic perspective with reference to:
    - the way partners work together, reflect and try to build solutions that could allow a more sustainable and inclusive development of their territory though the innovation of the educational model and a long term perspective;

    - the focus on impact beyond the project which is considering from the beginning as a legacy to develop, throughout self - sustainable models for some of the activities (those more related to touristic field and creative industry fields) and public services for other type of activities and models (welfare services);

    - the development of the plan of action across two territorial axes, each including tree different neighborhoods, that value single visions competences and skills of engaged organisations, but at the same time, aims to foster the whole network impact and generated value and could stimulate a virtuous circle of codesign and policy making together with local public administration;
    - sport and culture combined in a program of informal education that has a pillar in the youth protagonism and that is based on the discovery and evaluation of the territory of origin and the own attitudes.
    Even if each local context presents typical and original elements that influence the reply or transfer of successful initiatives, especially in the field of social impact characterized by a high level of subjectivity and a more qualitative approach, there are some elements that could be transferred as:
    - The systematic approach and the attitude to codesign.
    - The mix of competences and the interaction of the two fields of action (culture and sport) as preeminent fields to stimulate youth participation
    - The governance model
    - The long term perspective and a policy making vision
    - The evaluation system
    - Specific processes referred to actions of the program and output.
    Project methodology considers the relation between young and adult and between young and young as the first educational tool and not cognitive learning tool.The learning from a relation is powerful and deeper in comparison to the transmission of contents.For this reason, the methodology applicated is based on the care of the relational interaction of the group of participants, the respect of diversity and the promotion of and active listening.Young could compare with other institutional and organizational models that are different from those of school and working context, and are based on horizontal participative and collaborative systems that could become opportunities of change and new models of life and work.The educational offer is base on a combination of practices and methodologies as the pacefulpeaceful conflict management, cooperative games, the community mapping, the planning for real, the creative and social – emotional learning, the experiential learning and awareness practices. The sport, with is potential of education and participation, the capacity to promote the psycho-physical wellbeing, the power to spread the growth perspective of boys and gilrsgirls, is a key element for an inclusive reappropriation of the territory that allows the felling of symbolic and physical walls that separate opportunities and public venues.In coherence with the ecosystem approach of the initiative, also the system of monitoring and evaluation has been developed thanks to a participative and shared approach. A process going beyond the evaluation of all the activities as a sum of them, but referred to the impact of participative processes and learning exchanges in the educational dimension to perceive local development.The starting point is the participative work among engaged stakeholder to define the change they want to produce.The methodology of the Theory of Change is the one we chosen to define long term goals and to identify the precondition for their success
