  • Description of the project
The Styrum Sports Park in Mülheim an der Ruhr is a family and generation-friendly sports and leisure park that offers challenging and unusual activities.
The new sports park, located on the site of a former cinder pitch, was created with the support of local clubs, residents, athletes and children from local schools and kindergartens. The diverse offerings including the Ninja Run, the beach volleyball courts, the interactive goal wall and the variety of outdoor fitness equipment are integrated into a flowing and connecting landscape designed for diverse activities and encounters.
The extensive grassland areas provide a calm contrast to the high-intensity sports activities. They offer opportunities to linger, picnic or use sports equipment integrated into the landscape while also being designed for ecological purposes such as rainwater retention or for serving as a grassy pasture for insects. To offer active breaks, the small playground of the adjacent school was modernised and a new, physical activity playground for older kindergarten and younger school school children was developed.
The surroundings of the sports hall, the municipal day-care centre and the Feldmann foundation park are linked via the park with its sports landscape. This has created synergies and opened up previously closed places.
We see the low-threshold, free and stimulating sports offers in the park as a key that may also introduce users to the complementary offers of the local clubs as well as educational and cultural institutions. This approach is also supported by firmly established on-site supervision.

    Ecological purposes
The Styrum Sports Park features an active rainwater management system allowing the water from all sealed surfaces to seep into the ground. Early participation and networking of stakeholders has created social interaction, increased acceptance and ensures good maintenance of the park. Existing soil and base layers / paving are reused. Solar panels on the open-air hall provide energy. The retention areas and new planting with native woody plants and seedlings ensure a good microclimate.
The Styrum Sports Park sets high standards in terms of aesthetics and quality of experience. The special corporate design developed for the park makes it recognisable. The main colour yellow can be found in many places across the park. All signs, the sports and playground equipment as well as the park furniture have a sophisticated and integrated design. Despite a multitude of different fixtures, the sports park has a very aesthetic and high-quality design.
The accessible Styrum Sports Park appeals to people of all ages, social classes and cultures. It is a park for encounters, shared experiences, sport and exercise. All activities in this public space are free of charge. During opening hours, there is a programme of courses and events, and local street workers regularly come and use the sports park as a contact point. It is an important social space in the neighbourhood.
The Styrum Sports Park was created with the active involvement of local clubs, residents, athletes and children from local schools and kindergartens.
There were several participation formats on site as a presentation and workshop format with the actors on site (students / (sports) teachers of the schools, members of the sports club, children and educators of the kindergarten, as well as the intensive involvement of the Mülheimer Sport Service and the subsequent maintenance and management of the facility. Parallel to the construction work, a website was created for the park. This shows the construction process as well as offers and news about the park after completion.
Integration: good example of neighbourhood development
Aesthetics: the park’s corporate design invites visitors to come and to join in
Sustainability: solar panels on the open-air hall, rainwater management, retention areas, native woody plants and seedlings
The Styrum Sports Park on the outskirts of Mülheim offers numerous informal as well as guided activities, creating places for togetherness and movement. One important aspect is the involvement of local schools, clubs and associations such as Styrumer TV, the Feldmann Foundation, the Willy Brand School, the municipal primary school and the Karlchen day-care centre. To bring together different users, there are offers such football for girls, hip hop workshops, beach volleyball tournaments, boules, "midnight sports" and much more. The Styrum Sports Park combines different qualities and provides a community spirit while creating a colourful park of togetherness.
    - Wide range of public sports offers that never existed before in this form
    - The park is open to all
    - Ecological parameters
After an initial public kick-off event, several planning and participation events were held with the Styrum institutions (school, kindergarten, club, etc.) for further coordination. Based on the planning meetings, the concept of the sports park was further adapted to the needs of the stakeholders. The planning company DTP then translated these ideas into a plan and a cost calculation.
The first construction phase was financed with a donation from the Tengelmann Group and funds from the Leonhard Stinnes Foundation and the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr. The second major construction phase is being funded primarily by the state of NRW, from the Social Integration in Neighborhoods investment pact, with around 2.6 million euros plus the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr's own contribution.
Playing in public places, events, various courses on offer as this is a diverse, multifunctional place where a lot can happen; a sustainable site thanks to rainwater infiltration; a wide range of offers for everyone
    - Sport as an intercultural, unifying element can help overcome different world views and build bridges.
    - Active negotiation of playing times and rules promote democracy.
    - Reuse of materials and multicoding of areas minimises the project’s ecological footprint.
    - Decentralised rainwater retention and infiltration as well as evaporation of rainwater through newly planted native trees and extensive meadows help to cool the area and contribute to groundwater recharge.
