DoppelPlus empowers individuals and low-income households to make a contribution to the Tyrolian energy and climate strategy within their
means.
By taking advantage of personalised coaching, individuals will receive valuable tips on mitigating climate change and resource management in their own households. They get a free energy efficiency and climate change mitigation starter package. This package includes tools to improve energy efficiency as well as sustainable living. In addition, there are other customised initiatives such as ‘train-the-trainer programmes,’ information campaigns and the teaching of environment basics in German language courses for beginners.
The goal of all measures is a “double plus” or win-win situation: Good for you and good for the environment.
The DoppelPlus campaign aims to relieve the burden on one’s household budget while at the same time increasing personal quality of life. In addition,
a more conscious use of energy and resources contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change.

For households:
+ Strengthening individual action for climate change mitigation and the resulting reduction in energy expenditure increases quality of life.
Through the coaching the households learn how to reduce their energy consumption and their impact on the climate. They get tools and knowledge for their own home and their living conditions. The coaching is individually and focused on their needs. The topics are: living, heating, electricity, mould prevention, mobility, consumer behaviour, nutrition, waste separation, adapting to climate change, climate change mitigation
For our province:
+ Because the community promotes mitigating climate change in Tyrol through more conscious and responsible action thereby reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, we all come a step closer to our shared vision of an energy-autonomous Tyrol.
For households:
+cultural benefits: households coming from migrantic backgrounds benefit from the informations given on local conditions as seasonal food and regional recipe and methods of heating and waste separation which were hitherto unknown to them.
+design: we offer each household a recipe booklet with 83 pages of regional and seasonal recipes with professional photographs to inspire them to try a new climate friendly was of cooking.
+ positive emotions: the households register voluntarily for the coaching and are more open to chance. The coaching is structured as dialogue and individual challenges can also be addressed.
for coaches:
+ cultural benefits: our coaches regularily meet clients from different cultural backgrounds in the households and learn about different attitudes and approaches to daily life which help to acquire multicultural competences and increase their level of empathy as well as their skills in instructing.
+ positive emotions: We also do have coaches with migration background and / or refugees and we are directly addressing this target group. These coaches receive large appreciation from the clients and make the experience of self-efficacy which helps them to strengthen their self-confidence in a foreign environment. Our coaches in general profit from the positive interaction with the clients as well from the meetings and activities offered for the coaches on a regular base.
Your volunteers have different backgrounds and know different languages like Arabic and Turkish. You don't need any prior knowledge or specific skills. The volunteers learn everything in our training. The inhibition threshold is lower. Due to the diversity of our volunteers, coaching appointments can be assigned more flexibly and households that do not know German can also be looked after.
We work with different stakeholders who refer us to their clients. For example, assisted living, women's groups, churches, social institutions.
Citizens i.e. the households which apply for our coachings benefit from measurably energy reduction due to the informations and energy-saving tools our coaches provide.
The DoppelPlus campaign aims to relieve the burden on one’s household budget while at the same time increasing the personal quality of life. In addition, a more conscious use of energy and resources contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Households will receive additional energy-saving and climate change mitigation articles, which will be directly installed.
Among other things, this “starter package” in-cludes LED lamps, thermo-hygrometers, time switches if required, switchable power strips, flow limiters and much more. The aim is to empower people to take responsibility and to raise awareness and promote energy efficiency and mitigating climate change. An average yearly reduction of 209 Euros per household has been achieved by the coachings.
In addition to energy and climate coaching in low-income households, the following measures are part of DoppelPlus:
+ Creating and developing targeted offers
+ Train-the-Trainer Programme
+ Implementing topics into German courses
+ Creating awareness amongst Tyroleans
+ Building up an established energy and climate coaching network for the future
DoppelPlus has been funded by the EU Commission’s LIFE programme Life15 GIC/AT/000092 - LIFE-ClimAct „Climate action campaign for low-income households.
Several regional stakeholders have been or still are involved in DoppelPlus:
+ Energie Tirol brought / brings technical know-how to the project, p.e. in form of trainings for the volunteers and in the cooperative production of an energy safe life-hack-brochure.
+komm!unity Wörgl, Caritas Tirol bring / brought networking skills and broad existing contacts to the target group.
Klimabündnis Tirol as well as alpS -Centre for Climate Change Adaptation bring / brought know-how in informing and instructing companies as well as individuals in sustainable development and in dealing with the consequences, opportunities and risks of climate change.
The Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG and Tiroler Wasserkraft AG supported /support DoppelPlus through the introduction of knowledge, structures, networks as well as financial and non-cash benefits.
Land Tirol and Stadtwerke Wörgl co-financed the project.
The DoppelPlus campaign became an integral fixture of the province’s energy strategy TIROL 2050 energy-autonomous.
disciplines / knowledge fields: social science, sustainability management, pedagogy, communication science, engineering.
interactions: regular meetings with the different stakeholders. Every stakeholder was able to contribute their knowledge in the respective subject area.
added value: the different backgrounds of the representatives helped in defining the target group and a common base of to-be-communicated energy saving knowledge, implementing networking and monitoring structure.
The main objective of the project is to bring about changes in daily activities and everyday practices in favour of energy efficiency and mitigating climate change in households. Improved quality of life and everyday cost savings are the key messages behind the offers and activities. At the beginning of the project, the target group was limited to people with low incomes. Since June 2022, this target group has been expanded to include tenants. The reason for this is the price increase. As a result, energy costs are becoming a problem for more and more people. It also lowers the inhibition threshold. Households no longer have to state that they claim social benefits or have a low income. Through our stakeholders, we still target people with low incomes.
Volunteers benefit by the training to become a voluntary energy and climate coach, which offers not only an increase in one’s own competence and meaningful employment, but also the possibility of a first job or reintegration into the labour market.
Long term impact: Networking, exchange and cooperation in creating sustainable, regional structures, partnerships and collaborative endeavours and the long-term implementation of the DoppelPlus campaign as part of the province’s energy strategy TIROL 2050 energy-autonomous.
Results: average annual savings of 209€ for a household. Annual Reduce of 667kg CO² Emmiossion per household. Since the start of the project 1067 householts were reached and 124 volunteers were trained.
DoppelPlus is the first and only project in Tyrol providing cost-free energy-save household coachings on the base of volunteering coaches.
For Volunteers:
Due to the high diversity of the volunteers, it helps with the inclusion of migrants. Volunteers have been able to expand their knowledge through the project. It also helped on the job market. In this way, volunteers were integrated into the labor market.
For Householdes:
Due to the high diversity, other households could be addressed. All household tips have been summarized in a brochure and translated into five languages. This enabled language barriers to be removed.
The advantage of household coaching is that you look at the household as a whole. This allows you to directly address the circumstances and realities of life. Simply knowing about energy-saving tips is of not enouth if you don't know how to implement them in your own household.
Volunteers are deployed close to home. They can also use this to pass on local tips and offers to the households like local mobility, farm shops or repair cafes. They know about other social services and can pass households there if necessary
The problems of households are manifold but the solution (or the best possible way to optimise the situation) is often possible with simple means.
This is the task of volunteer energy and climate coaches.
Thanks to free budget coaching sessions for individuals and for the target group, cost savings and thereby profit for one’s own household budget is a welcome effect. The aim is to empower people to take responsibility and to raise awareness and promote energy efficiency and mitigating climate change.
Through conscious thinking and acting, the personal quality of life for household inhabitants and our common living spaces are sustainably improved.
Our project could easily be transferred in other regions / countries / states with a similar climatic background. The project is already in implementation in our neighbour province Vorarlberg, following our mode. Tranfer to other groups of beneficiaries: Our project could also be targeted to other groups as there is a necessity for energy-saving in nearly every household because of climate change and increasing energy costs. Examples would be landlords or owners of flats and houses, elderly people with low pensions in large and poorly isolates housing. Transfer to other topics: Our approach of training volunteers on how to instruct and and coach other individuals could certainly be transferred to other topics provided that the topics are founded in the daily life reality oft he volunteers.
Energy reduce on an individual level and adapted to the living conditions. We reduce CO² emissions together. Householdes learn about climatechance and they get empowered to reduce there cost of living. Its a prevention for energie poverty.
