  • Description of the initiative
Our initiative is a small elementary school located in Croatia in a small town called Petrinja. After the earthquake in 2020, which destroyed the whole town, school was the place where people met. Nowadays there are 372 students and 72 employees( teachers and stuff). We are successful in a lot of curricular and extracurricular programs like sport, ICT, robotics and School cooperative called' Lovreki.' Our School cooperative has a goal to develop and cherish students working habits and skills along with positive competence and climate. 'Lovreki' is a place where we inspire students to be creative, inventive and ecologically aware. Students are familiar with working with clay and glass and using the kiln. The part of the school that is used for school cooperative activities is a part of the school that needs renewal as soon as possible. We need to renew the floor( ground), close the holes on the walls and paint the walls, put new and functional furniture like chairs, tables, cupboards, shelfs and sinks. We want to buy the Heat Press and printer and expend students' knowledge about textile design, fashion and product design, redesign and innovations. We will need production material( raw material) like clay, glass, textile bags and T-shirts. We need to renew tools and glaze for clay processing. We want to help students learn how to manufacture clay, glass or textile products. The mentors of this process are going to be our teachers that are already running the activities and local pottery master. The teachers already have the knowledge of working with textile but we didn't have the tools and the machines to start the activities.
    renovation of school cooperative premises
making the school cooperative premises more usable and functional when working with clay and glass
implementing new activity- working with textile and the Heat Press
    reuse and recycle art
    equal opportunities for everybody
One of the main goals of our initiative is going to be the renovation of the premises that our school cooperative is using for their activities. We are going to use a local contractor promoting job opportunities for our locals because after the earthquake people lost their workplaces. The school cooperative is going to be a place where we teach children how to use glass, clay and textile while respecting the goals of reuse and recycling. Teaching them about the benefits of using knowledge and making something with their own hands. This can enrich our students’ lives and expend their standpoint on sustainable development.
Our initiative is going to try to plan the idea of some basic sustainable goals. The School cooperative has already gotten the awards on the theme reuse and recycle art. We would like to learn our students to produce textile products and produce packaging products which they can use to save our school cooperative money on packaging and invest in other material and slowly but safely show them means of knowledge that they can use in the business world in the future.
It is important to empower all sorts of groups to take part in this process of education like all ethnic groups, students of all social statuses, students with diminished capacities and gender equality(girls, women).
Aesthetics and quality in school is very connected. As you see in the pictures now the school cooperative premises look very demotivating. We are aware it is a working space but we will use our aesthetics to compliment usability and functionality of this space. We are hopping that the renewal will improve the quality of our students' school life. We need to renew the floors because after the earthquake we didn't renovate this part of the school because it wasn't essential for school life and lessons. But now we see that this is the first thing that has to be done. After that we need to put tiles because it is a working space and it is easier to clean it after the activities. Another thing is we need to paint the walls and insure that all the shelfs and cupboards are screwed to the walls because of the children's safety. We will need several large tables and chairs which will balance the practical and innovative atmosphere. Giving children the space that is clean, new and it is for their use. This will produce positive climate, the feeling of responsibility and teamwork. In renewed premises the students will learn have to be creative, original, inventive, enthusiastic and ecologically aware. We hope that the skills we learn children now they will be used in their future for their pleasure or as a type of earning.
The premises of our school cooperative is going to be available for all the students and teachers in our school. It is going to be free for all. The teachers/mentors are going to educate everyone interested in joining and working with clay, glass and textile. We are going to organize free workshops for parents and students from different schools. All the goals, aims and planning of School Cooperative is going to be written in the School Curriculum and School Year Plan. It is going to be visible on the school sites. The plans and programs of the School Cooperative is written by mentors and approved by head teacher and Teachers' council of the school. All the activities will be organized once a week or as it is necessary. The students' products or art is going to be displayed or sold on exhibitions, competitions and school cooperative fairs.
The biggest influence of this initiative will be on students who are going to learn new skills working with textile and expending their knowledge about clay and glass. If they decide to use this knowledge, they could extent it and base their future on it. Another beneficiary of this initiatives are teachers and stuff who are learning new skills and passing their knowledge to other students or interested parties. The premises of School operative have to be open to all who want to participate in the process of organizing and learning and they are part of the school. The School cooperative has to be open to parents. They have to know the conditions of premises in which their children are learning and making products and art and all these have to be available for public( in glass shelfs in the assembly hall). We are plan to expand our visibility to other schools that are in our area. Our teachers/mentors will pass on knowledge to other students and teachers disseminating the ideas that are the cornerstone of our School cooperative 'Lovreki'. Petrinja is a well known town of pottery-making but after the earthquake and the new technologies in pottery we have just two pottery masters and one is getting really old. So we have to work on spreading the idea about clay, glass and textile. All the work of School cooperative is going to be visible on official school pages and on school's Facebook site.
We are going to hire a local company to renovate the premises of our school cooperative. After the renovation of the place and after the school cooperative starts with producing the art or other products, we are going to organize a few exhibitions in school, try to participate in two competitions in our county and participate in County official school cooperative fair. We are going to disseminate the idea of working with clay, glass and textile with other school cooperatives in our county and try to activate the interest on higher level. If you decide to help the Petrinja's children and renovate the premises of our school cooperative we are going to share your idea of sustainable goals and good polices of helping the needy and vulnerable promoting equality, education for all, creating job opportunities and recycling/reusing.
We will use traditional knowledge working with clay, glass and textile that our teachers/mentors have already learnt from other pottery masters and glass and textile online educations. Teachers/mentors are going to use practical knowledge, using educative and indicative reasoning and scientific approaches which they have learnt trough experience and their education.. Our students give best results if they learn trough proactive teaching and training using their hands. After the children learn the techniques of processing clay, glass and textile they can independently work and create.
Our teachers/mentors are already using clay and glass in their products and art. They use the traditional clay and glass processing, using the knowledge that they learnt from old pottery masters from Petrinja. The new approach is connected to activities in which students manufacture the textile products that they can wear( T-shirts) or use (bags). The students will be taught about fashion and product design. They are going to learn different designing and restoration techniques like transfer the design to textile and reuse the product. All the teaching will be done by our teachers. If necessary teacher will be sent to online courses, but now they have the basic knowledge they need to implement the idea.
Our School cooperative will collaborate with other schools or other school cooperatives that need new ideas. Both the teachers and students are going to organize the workshops for all the stakeholders especially students and teachers. The best techniques to learn new skills are experience and practical workshops. They can even be organized online in case if the interested school cooperative or individuals are faraway from Petrinja or any other reason.
The teachers are going to use teacher-centered instruction where the teacher explains the process of working with clay, glass and textile. After that, students can be divided into small groups to try to help each other in process called cooperative learning. Slowly as they get the basic knowledge, they will get small project-based learning tasks, depending on their affinities to the certain material. It is important to try to use as much as we can student-centered learning approaches in which students explore material with which they are working, using their creative and critical problem-solving skills to make an object that they can use. We must support our students to express themselves confidently and to learn how to work both independently and in collaboration with other students.
From our stand of point, we can see the problem is lack of trained and qualified people who can work with clay and glass because these techniques are old and they belong to traditional crafts. In Petrinja, which is very famous for its clay, we have just two pottery masters( one is pensioner). The one that remained is highly sought after and needs help. Our students are young but if we learn them to see the benefits of knowing the techniques working with clay, they can even one day start their own businesses. We need to restore the school cooperative premises because there isn't a place like this in an area in which we live. Our school cooperative can provide a lot of knowledge to community if we only had good learning and working conditions.
    STEPS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION
    1. Hiring local constructor to renew the flooring in two larger rooms, hall, three smaller rooms and toilet. It is the area around 70 square meters. After that we need to lay tiles because we need the floors that can be easy to maintain. We need to paint the walls.
    2. We need to buy furniture- 2 big tables, few chairs, shelfs, cupboards, small tools for working with clay and glass and glaze and colors. We need to secure raw/production material( clay, glass, bags,T-shirts).
    3. We need to buy the Heat press for transferring designs on textile and a printer to print out the designs.
    4. The process of progress of renovating the school cooperative premises will be regularly monitored by head teacher and teachers/mentors,the public and all the stakeholders involved. All the interested parties will be informed on social media and official school site.
    5. After the premises are renovated, children will start to work with their teachers/mentors. The teachers are going to make the plan of activities and aims and they will include this in School's Crriculum and School's Annual plan and program.
    6. The School cooperative 'Lovreki' is going to spread the idea of equal opportunity for al,l no matter which gender, social status or nationality. Students are going to learning basic techniques working with clay, glass and textile which can bring joy and satisfaction in their young lives, but making themselves a good job opportunity in the future.
    7. It is our responsibility to give our students the place where they can develop and cherish working habits and skills. We need to give them a place where they can become positive people enjoying the creative process of making something and displaying the work, but also the place where they feel safe.
The students will learn the techniques of working with clay, glass and textile. This could give them new possibilities in life even if they used learnt skills and knowledge just for fun and their pleasure. New student's skills will lead to finding what they could do in the future giving them the ability to do something successful and efficient. The initiative is going to work on school sustainability like recycling and reusing paper, plastic and glass or providing education for all the children in the community and empowering woman and girls and ensuring their equal rights.
