The guests of the center (all with cognitive problems) designed the layout of the fyberglass facade, more freely and according to their personal interpretation. They also contributes to the design and construction process in several workshop

Description of the project
Please provide a summary of your project.
The laboratories and socio-educational center buildings are part of a whole complex dedicated to the care of disabled people and complete a program that also includes a restaurant, a multifunctional hall and some public spaces.
Because of the total lack of public funding, the building is totally self finaced by acivities open to the public. This way Noivoiloro became the most important civic center of the whole territory.

The mood of the association is that disability is not seen as a impairment but as a different point of view.
We could consider that a difficult condition could become a heritage for the community, thus the building too was capable of giving spaces to citizenship for years; the so-called "poor" materials (a choice forced by economic conditions) is an option of radical and more expressive language.

The fiberglass facade has a very limited cost,but has a strong expressive character. The material protects and reveals at the same time about fifty linear LED lamps that give light to the square that hosts the pedestrian entrance.
The idea is that the lights, the naval metal pipes that host the electrical wiring and the round junction boxes represent a sort of "nervous system" of the building. For this reason it looked particularly interesting that it was the guests of the center (all with cognitive problems) who designed the layout, more freely and according to their personal interpretation.
During a one-day workshop everyone produced a two-dimensional model of the facade using woolen threads, matches and pins. People with Down Syndrome, post-traumatic people with comprehension and communication problems, or blind persons participated. In some ways the track reflects the type of mental problem, some of obsessive rigor, some particularly elaborate and cheerfully confused.
The peoplewho live here contributed in several design and construction activities during workshops.

the project is built with great monetary sustainaibility, investing in radical architectural language, using "poor" materials and sharing spaces.
Noivoiloro believes in social sustainibility improving integration of all the people belonging to the community, with particular attention to the weaker sections.
Noivoloro Laboratories and Socio Educational Center is built with high energy sustainable concept.
The benches - like the pavement of the square - are made of solid earth, composed by aggregates and completely recyclable natural binder.

Please give information about the key objectives of your project in terms of aesthetics and quality of experience for people (through design, positive emotions and cultural benefits) and how these have been met. Please highlight how the project can be exemplary in this context.
Noivoiloro invest in the right to Beauty for everyone.
The difficulties is converted in a point of strenght, trasforming the so called "poor" materials in a radical language.
In the Laborastories and Socio Educational Center the choices aimed at minimum budget are reaffrmed in the rear elevations, without plaster and ﬁnished with load-bearing brick masonry made by “poroton” blocks coated in glossy paint, which reveal the building in its radical nakedness even in the walled up holes above the rear entrance door.These materials revealed in their con-structive essence, unveil hidden textures and suggest surprising details.
Even if built with a very low budget (less than 900 €/sqm) is offering generous and multifunctional spaces with a high contribution of natural light.
Spaces are cozy and experimental in the same way.
THe big bench carved in the facade hosts people in common open space. There is a very hingh connection between buildings and open spaces.

Please highlight how the project can be exemplary in this context.
Noivoiloro is a no profit association for the care of people with disabilities (even if we prefer to say different abilities). The laboratories and socio-educational
center buildings are part of a whole com-plex dedicated to the care of disabled people and complete a program that also includes a restaurant, a multifunctional
hall and some public spaces. Because of the total lack of public funding, 80% of activities are organized to raise money for the 20% of the activities, that’s the care of people with disabilities. Paradoxiccaly this economical and social weackness transformed it in the biggest Civic Center of the whole territory.The mood of the association is that disability is not seen as an impairment but as a different point of view. We could consider that a diffcult condition could become a heritage for the community thus the building too, was capable of giving spaces to citizenship for years;This has made it possible to host a very large number of activities, increasing the level of integration and demonstrating the inversion of the canonical relationship of assistance between disabled people and citizens. Noivoiloro offers places to carry out activities for anyone who needs them.

Any kind of ceremony or events are hosted in Noivoiloro buildings. shows, ceremonies, funerals, weddings of all religions, meetings, catering, work activities, open air festivals, dance, yoga and theatrical courses, ethnic celebrations of migrant communities are hosted here, in addition to daily activities. Noivoiloro is the union of 4 associations and has more than a thousand members who took part in the decision-making phase of the project.

The outcome of this design activity, which was chosen for the construction, surprising and fascinating at the same time, reveals an Innocence that has something to do with the concept of “Grace”.The radical option to leave the power sup-ply lines in plain sight has suggested the use of the metal pipes that travel non-logical and sometimes very articulated routes. It was decided to respect the original design even where the layout was particularly “illogical” but extraordinarily creative. Other parts, as the benches of the square were built with direct aim of the guest.

The Municipality has contributed with an agreement for the use of the construction land, fundamental for the starting-up of the project

the building project was developed by crossing a multiplicity of technical and socio-humanistic skills. the comparison with educators expert in disability was decisive.

the project was developed with a great deal of experimentation. this made it attractive and innovative. From a typological point of view, the project increases the percentage of shared spaces, fueling the principle of inclusion and integration.

the project reverses the traditional concept of assistance to the weakest groups, ensuring that they are the ones to offer help and space to the community of citizens.

Under th architectural point of view, he choices aimed at minimum budget, without plaster and ﬁnished with load-bearing brick masonry made by “poroton” blocks coated in glossy paint, which reveal the building in its radical nakedness. These materials revealed in their constructive essence, unveil hidden textures and suggest surprising details and gives domesticity and a sense of welcome to the interiors. Some "deliberate uncertainties" from a functional point of view are actually the strong point of the project, allowing the various activities to cross each other, and thus fueling the integration. The sharing and co-participation of the design and construction processes strengthens the sense of belonging of the inhabitants of the buildings

in a Society crossed by the economic, social and value crisis, we believe that the methodology used to invest in difficulties may be the most appropriate response. The project was required to be explained in various similar situations in order to be replicated, in some way.

Inclusion, the Right to Beauty, giving an active role to the weakest groups, investing in poverty is a necessary social and political act.
