The architecture emerges as an integrative element of the landscape capable of reviving places and equally ensuring them a future. Consequently, a project named “A trail of cold war” (“Um troço de Guerra fria”), that addressed the appreciation of the mining industrial patrimony of Regoufe and Rio de Frades complexes, was conceived.

It addresses urban-rural linkages
It refers to a physical transformation of the built environment (hard investment)
The developed theme represents an integral part of “The black gold route” (“A rota do ouro negro”), which is the aggregation composed by three independent final year architecture projects outlined in distinct Arouca’s locations that complement and relate themselves through a pedestrian route. The construction of a program inserted in the complexes is characterized by a surgical, punctual and strategic intervention based on the understanding of the industrial structures and their functioning. Therefore, “A trail of cold war” represents a permanent museological and archeological space that promotes the study of the mining complexes of Regoufe and Rio de Frades in the field of Archeology, Geology and History. The project proposed the introduction of an interpretative route with complementing elements in the mining complex of Rio de Frades, and an investigative center and temporary habitations for the investigators in Regoufe. Both mining complexes fuse themselves in a drawn route which incorporates old trails used by the miners, promoting a better comprehension of the territory and landscape transformation.
In the case of the Rio de Frades complex, the route is the main and strategically designed element in this complex, since it is only possible to understand its structure by walking the territory.
Adjacent to the route, new elements appear in the territory, located at different points and levels of the complex, aiming to improve the infrastructure and quality of life of the population of Rio de Frades and those who visit it.

The construction and use of a building involve a significant consumption of resources, which today are becoming increasingly scarce as a result of the abusive use that humanity has made of them.
It is therefore up to the designers to reach a solution that seeks to minimize the consumption of mineral, energy and water resources, thus promoting true sustainability in construction.
In conceptual terms, an attempt was made to maintain pre-existences and recover them when necessary. In this way, its identity and history in space and time are respected, and in more practical terms, solid waste generated by demolitions, earth movements and other additional environmental impacts related to the movement of vehicles are minimized.
In new constructions, efforts should be made to adopt energy-sustainable solutions, that is, solutions that make the building self-sustainable, namely the use of photovoltaic panels that generate the energy necessary for the building to function. An attempt was also made to orientate the buildings in accordance with the best solar orientation and with solar protection in the spans, in order to obtain the maximum solar gains and also protection from solar incidence, thus minimizing the use of consumer mechanical heating/cooling equipment. power.
In terms of water, equipment is planned to promote the efficient use of this resource, namely water-saving mixers for taps, flow reducers and water-saving cisterns. If it is economically viable, also consider the possibility of reusing rainwater (after treatment) in the needs of exterior arrangements, for example in irrigation or cleaning of spaces.
In Arouca, Aveiro, a scenario stands out capable of telling stories that once reflected hard times of hostility and war. Today, what remains are ruins. Ruins that establish a symbiosis between man and nature in a constant association between mining structures and the rural landscape, making it a fragile and unique territory that demands preservation.
Architecture emerges as an integrating element of the landscape capable of reviving places and equally assuring them of a future. Thus, a project called “A section of the Cold War” was conceived, which addressed the enhancement of the mining industrial heritage of the complexes of Regoufe and Rio de Frades.
The new elements introduced in the two complexes are differentiated not only by their contemporary character, but also by their materiality, namely the exposed concrete. The proposed elements, allow a harmonious articulation of the accesses of different levels of the complexes and a permanent dialogue with ruin.
Added to a considerably vast area, represented by the mining area of Arouca, A section of the cold war emerges in the understanding of a time of transformation, development and construction of the landscape, culminating in a project capable of enhancing and rehabilitating not only the mining complexes in question, but also the landscape that reaches us today.
With the development of the Ouro Negro Route, an attempt is made to introduce valences that enhance the use of the territory by people, giving back to the public places that for decades were essential for the day-to-day life of the inhabitants and which, nowadays, is at abandonment. Thus, develop support equipment for studies, in village of Drave, interpretive visits and a mining research centre, in the mining complexes of Regoufe and Rio de Frades, and a memorial to
mineiros, at the portal of Hell, providing a trip to the past in which it is capable of taking advantage of in the field of investigation and, at the same time, present environments of a sensorial and introspective character where prevailed the constant connection between Man and Nature.
A section of the cold war is a permanent museum and archeological space that aims to promote the study of complexes miners from Regoufe and Rio de Frades in the field of Archeology, Geology and History. This intervention is composed of a surgical character, punctual and strategic in the territory capable of demonstrating that Architecture is equally composed of elements that merge with the landscape and with the topography, allowing its valorization It is essential, emphasizing that the proposed works, A Rota do Ouro Negro, within the scope of the fifth-year Project discipline in the Master of Integrated Architecture, as well as the acrobatics capacity of themselves, demonstrated that they are capable of creating a response button to territories and themes of this nature. The concern to protect and study the industrial heritage is very recent and it is essential to look at these material remains as heritage, since, until recently, they have played a structuring role in the urban and economic conception of society.
The project proposes a specific intervention that aims to be able to create an interpretative route, as well as the insertion of new
elements that intend to support the proposed theme. This additionally has the purpose of enabling the improvement of infrastructure and quality of life of the population of Rio de Frades, involving residents of the village in this new territory strategy, emphasizing the importance of burden of the historic site, just as the descendants of the ancients company workers preserved and continued to give life to this village.
This project was developed to make a contribution to the land, valuing the history of the country and the world. In contact with the institutions that operate and manage the municipality of Arou ca, an ongoing project called Rotas of wolfram in europe8 developed by ADRIMAG, which consists of exhibitions on the tungsten routes in Europe and the Water and Stone Route, Montanhas Mágicas with the aim of providing information on this theme, Thus, it assumes particular interest as historical and associated with these mining explorations, located in the villages of Regoufe and Rio de Frades, highlighting the impact on these small villages.
The vast diversity of geological phenomena in the county made which becomes a land of interest for these explorations, transforming several agricultural villages in the eastern part of the municipality into areas evolution and synonyms of supervision, being that the subsistence of this
people came from agriculture and, these explorations, provided improvements in rural daily life, bringing light to some areas, for example, electric.
A section of the cold war is a permanent museum and archaeological space that aims to promote the study of complexes miners from Regoufe and Rio de Frades in the field of Archaeology, Geology and History.
The implemented concept makes it possible to create a network of interventions of this nature throughout Europe and throughout the world. Associated with research, it enables the exchange of studies in various places in the academic and professional fields.
Associated with research, it enables the exchange of studies in various places in the academic and professional fields.
Site visits allow not only to attract attention to tourism but also to visits to schools and escorts.
Currently, the mining complexes boil down to just memoirs. Its fragments inspired by the territory awaken the imagination of those who have visited them.
The construction of a strategy for valuing and rehabilitating the mining landscape of the Regoufe and Rio de Frades complexes resulted from a understanding of these industrial structures and their operation, building an attitude towards these territories, in order to highlight these archaeological fields as main elements of the project. This concept should and can be applied in cases of heritage valuation all over the world, valuing the history of man and opening knowledge not only to local populations but also to the whole world.
The intervention focuses on the insertion of new elements that are introduced in the English company, namely: the parking lot, the mining interpretation center and the temporary housing. It is understood that, in two complexes, the existing ruins must be understood as an object of study, classifying them as industrial archaeology. So, without changing the what is left of the complex, the implantation of the program happens to be among the ruins, creating a dynamic and a dialogue between the researcher and the territory, capable of supporting industrial archeology and supporting the study of various sciences in this field.
The Black Gold Route, a section of the cold war constituted a project that allows to demonstrate that the interventions complement each other, not only by valuing the industrial and rural heritage, but also by strategy and reading at the scale of the territory carried out together. aggregate to a considerably vast area, represented by the mining area of Arouca, A section of the cold war arises in the understanding of a time of transformation, development and construction of the landscape, resulting of a project capable of valuing and rehabilitating not only the mining complexes in question, but also the landscape that reaches us today.
