  • Description of the concept
The project, leisure center cañada, comes from an investigation on the social exclusion suffered by some areas in particular. Causing in them a lack of motivation and opportunities. I wanted to take as a location, the area of the cañada real Galiana in Madrid. In it live about 8000 people, it is a humble area with a lot of cultural and ethnic diversity. It is divided into six sectors. I am going to focus on the sixth, which is the largest, it also has the electricity services cut, the sidewalks are not paved, it has no parks, supermarkets, public transport or any other type of service. One of the problems that exists is eviction, some are in favor, but others consider it their home where their family and friends are and do not want to leave. This point of view gives value to my project, since my idea is to generate a series of spaces that manage to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.
The answer I wanted to give to the problem of social exclusión, is to build a leisure center with spaces that provide activities to meet the needs, desires and motivations of users and this achieve personal satisfaction and a transformation of themselves and of things.
On the other hand, the construction system I have chosen is self-construction, the inhabitants of the glen can participate in the creation of the leisure center, this generating a community that helps them to get out of the precarious situation they live in and make the space their own.
As for the SDGs, I will address number one (end poverty), bringing opportunities and learning to abolish social exclusion. Number ten (reduction
of inequalities) by making these experiences similar to those in areas with more opportunities. Finally, number thirteen (climate action)The center is also designed to function as a self-sufficient system, using wind turbines, photovoltaic panels and draining surfaces to provide electricity, heating, water and wifi.

Specifically I am going to focus on the part of the social exclusion due to the distance of the resources of the center, understanding as resources the security, the culture, the belonging, the variety of activities, the possibility of future, etc. in some way all those reasons that make us want to go to the most central area, to take them to this other more remote area and in this way to make the experiences and experiences of these places similar.

In this zone the services are precarious, but beyond these services, the spaces that are inhabited or where they develop, have not had the possibility of being thought and adapted for them, that is to say the environment does not help this population to feel part of the rest of the city.

On the other hand, as I have mentioned in the problematic, there is a shortage of resources such as security, culture, belonging, variety of activities, the possibility of future, etc.

This is why the design opportunity I find is to generate a leisure center, with different spaces that provide a variety of activities to do and learn and therefore have a productive and enriching way to cover the free time, as well as their needs, their desires and their motivations. to get to reach personal satisfaction and a transformation of themselves and of things.
The space is designed so that all the inhabitants of the glen can enjoy it, but putting the focus when designing on the younger population, those people who are still in a learning period with less prejudices. This focus refers to how this situation can change and how they can be the future of this change in the area. The ultimate goal is that everyone participates in the creation of the leisure center cañada, and generate a community that can help them out of this precarious situation they live in.
The idea is that the inhabitants of the glen can participate in the construction of the leisure center. That is why I have designed different spaces with structures and forms not very complex, collected in an assembly catalog.
The pieces that make up each space are defined in terms of dimensions and materials, so that the work can be directed by professionals but at the same time, the inhabitants of the glen can participate in the construction and this somehow make this leisure center their own.

The materials used are pine wood with exterior treatment for the shape of the cabins, galvanized steel for the structures, translucent polycarbonate for the doors and glass for the skylights. The objective is that the design integrates into the environment, is economical and easy to build.
The key objective is to get the members of this community to have a space and resources close to their homes, to cover their free time, as well as adequate school performance and develop their physical and creative abilities.

For this reason, as I mentioned before, the center is designed in terms of functionality and design for the youngest, although it is accessible to all the inhabitants of the glen, but the decision I have made regarding addressing this problem of social exclusion Through leisure, it is due to ensuring that these young people from a young age can generate motivations that help both them and their families to get out of the precarious situation they live in.

The variety of things that can be done in other more privileged areas, create in us the possibility of finding those moments that make us happy and entertain us, with this we manage to carry out the day to day in a more enjoyable way.

These people do not have a park, or a sports center, or an audiovisual space, etc, and that causes a lack of motivation that leaves them stuck in this situation.
In this sector, electricity services have been cut off, so it is very difficult to face the winter.
The area has a lot of debris and is very close to the Valderingomez landfill.
The sidewalks are not paved, there are no parks, supermarkets, or any other services, and there is no access to public transportation near their homes.

Children from this sector study in schools in Madrid and Getafe, where they go on 14 school routes that leave from La Cañada, with the drawback that they arrive an hour late for school and finish classes at three in the afternoon. This means that in many cases they do not achieve the same school performance as their peers.

All these reasons are the cause of the decision to build this leisure center through self-construction, so that all the inhabitants of the glen can participate in the creation of this leisure center and help them generate a community with which to obtain resources that make them reach a rhythm of life according to the other members of society.

And in this case, the youngest are the ones who have the opportunity to generate this change, since they are in a process of maturity and learning.

The necessary agents that would also have to intervene for this to become a reality are the public administrations, the government and all the volunteers that are part of the aid given to these neighbourhoods.
In this case, the agents that should participate for the project to be carried out would be the public administrations, the government, all the volunteers that are part of the aid that is given to these neighborhoods and the inhabitants of the canyon.

But in the case of this project, no direct communication has been reached with these parties, we are talking about an idea that provides everything necessary for this to come true.

For this reason, an important part of the project so that it can be real is the problem of this neighborhood in Madrid.

When they have wanted to carry out urban development in these areas, they have seen the problems of this place, and the solution in many cases has always been to demolish and evict. For this reason there are two opinions, those who want to leave this place and those who consider it their home, where they have grown and lived all their lives and want to stay, this second opinion is what gives value to my project and makes that it is coorent to want to revive the neighborhood and not consider it finished.
Through the design of spaces as a resource, I tried to address the problem of social exclusion. And the conclusion was to generate a program that was based on eight areas, all connected by paths and different pieces of urban furniture that complete the entire leisure center.
In the first place, the sports and leisure area, is mixed by a main structure that includes different activities in and around it, some of the sports spaces are; basketball, soccer, volleyball courts, skate tricks, crossfit structure, climbing wall, etc... The next area is the leisure area, which is made up of small booths that allow for more private moments, for the use of each person. prefer. Next, the technology and audiovisual zone, this space is made up of two heights, on the first floor would be the computers, tablets and individual gaming places with the possibility of integrating into the space and on the second floor would be a cinema. This space extends to the outside with an open-air cinema.
The fourth is the food zone is an extension of the technology zone in the form of a kiosk, which is surrounded by a picnic area. The fifth, the music zone, is also a space designed with the possibility of integrating into the environment. It is divided into two areas created to be able to compose and produce music, but at the same time to hold concerts. The next area is the garden area, it is made up of a space with an accessible roof. Inside there is a small workshop, with tools and documentation for the care of fruits and plants, this space also extends outside with an orchard and a forest of fruit trees. The penultimate area of art and reading, this is a space designed with the possibility of integrating with the environment, it is made up of three areas, and two entrances, the first access takes you to the art area, with the possibility of painting in canvases, blackboards or walls and the second entrance would take you to a reading area. Finally, the maintenance and toilets area.
As an innovative character, it was taking fun / leisure, as a way of solving a problem, which was just the opposite of something fun. But analyzing the reason that makes two parts of society live so differently and fail to interact at any point in their lives, for reasons such as the places they visit and live, the education they receive, the activities they carry out , the opportunities they have, the responsibilities they have since they were little, ect...
It was to somehow get the most disadvantaged part of these two to manage to generate those ambitions or motivations that the other part did have.
I came to the conclusion that one of the reasons that makes us carry out our day to day in a more pleasant and happier way is to have things or moments that entertain us and that make us cover our free time in such a way that we feel productive and satisfied. with ourselves, this unconsciously generates a desire to continue and move forward.
For this reason, to begin to address this problem, you need to be able to take these tools to the most disadvantaged part. And the idea or the way that I proposed to carry it, was generating spaces that collected a variety of activities so that they could also find their moments of fun and disconnection and achieve that ambition, motivation and personal satisfaction, which they were not allowed before. or had not been provided.
This system of self-built cabins that I have designed is also designed so that it can be adapted to other places with a similar or the same social situation.
As I have mentioned before, the details so that each of the pieces can be built are collected in an assembly catalog where the materials, the number of pieces, the plants, sections, etc... are specified.

Each cabin can be individualized, in such a way that it corresponds to the needs of different places, whether only one of them is needed or several... it really can be modulated and adapted in the most optimal way.
The great global challenge is to achieve equal opportunities and rights among all of us who make up a society. And the reality is that this is not the case in many parts of the world.

In my case, delimiting the context of my project by choosing a specific area that has a clear case of social exclusion, helps me to solve in a more detailed way, the problems and needs that these inhabitants have, which in part will be the same as others. Inhabitants of different parts of the world would have it, because in general this is a problem that exists and that is increasing every time, creating very limited social classes, with very different experiences, and without the possibility of interaction between them. This generates a lack of knowledge about the different parties, which causes instability in society.

The experiences that differentiate us are many, but leisure and free time is something that we all have, the big difference is how we use it or what we can do depending on where we live, and from this starting point is where the inequality of the one who spoke For this reason, solving how to bring opportunities to the most excluded areas of society was the engine of the project to generate this leisure center, made up of different individual spaces that were connected by paths and urban furniture that revalued and expanded these areas that had nothing. where they can develop their skills and spend free time the way they really want.
