  • Description of the project
What is memory and what is its role in identity formation? How to give a building structure such living features that it can show memory itself? The project of the Hall of Remembrance at the Warsaw Insurgents Cemetery, an educational and martyrological facility, tries to answer these questions. The building is the culmination of efforts to preserve the memory and identity of the inhabitants of Warsaw who died during WW2 and the Warsaw Uprising. The hall is a "witness building" built of materials that change over time, age, remember and remember. A path leads to the Halls of Remembrance, which is an extension of one of the axes perpendicular to the avenue of the main composition of the Cemetery and Park, respecting the original landscape assumptions. Importantly, the Path, the Wall of Remembrance or the Hall itself become a specific "bridge" between Wolska Street, the Park and the Cemetery. The Hall of Remembrance consists of blocks with specific functions, bounded by two massive walls. The composition of blocks placed between parallel walls creates a bypass connected with the entrance corridors to the building. In the entrance area from Wolska Street, there is a block with an educational room for lectures, workshops and film screenings. The heart of the facility is the exhibition room with top-side lighting and skylights in the roof shell. The massive walls of the hall become the material that hides all the multimedia and technological elements useful in building the composition of the interactive exhibition. The walls become a carrier of a multimedia event. The exhibition and the building become one. The architecture itself serves to present the collections. The corridor as a "path of calmness" gradually cutting off the user from external stimuli. It consists of acoustic and chiaroscuro effects, affecting the sensuality of the assumption. The Hall is complemented by an entrance pavilion containing service functions. It houses technical facilities and installations.

    “Affectionate narrator”
    >Special protection solutions for the stand and vegetation - a system of protection of root balls with ventilated platforms fixed with anchors screwed into the ground, lifting the floor layers above the root line so as not to damage them. This solution allowed to integrate the architecture smoothly and with respect for the green surroundings, but also to maintain proper absorption of rainwater in the affected area.
    >Hybrid foundations, individual for specific places - to bypass and protect the roots.
    >Cellars have been avoided - no large displacements of the earth
