  • Description of the project
This work is linked to the long tradition of the dyeing craft a its rich cultural history.
The body of work is an experimental silk city map that reflects the colors of my everyday paths through my student city Halle an der Saale.
You can see extracted plant colors dyed in textiles that I collected next to supermarkets, bus stops, park benches a bicycle wheels.
The cityscape now shines in its color image, which is hidden most city dwellers and an impulse arises to perceive our urban space independent of existing economic and traffic systems. It is my concern to show us as viewers again the pure power the natural resource from our immediate vicinity and to approach our possibilities in the urban space with new eyes. Likewise, to trigger an attitude of reverence, humility and respect through the power of color becoming visible and the expression of its resource. The gaze is opened.
This principle is representative for any urban space and places living.

In everyday life in an urban environment, we hardly or not at all perceive our natural environment and surrounding. For the idea of sustainability, I see a sensibilsiation of perception to our natural environment with the potentials in its resources as an important medium. By internalizing the coexistence of humans and nature and gaining an appreciation of our natural environment, we can ultimately live together in a sustainable way. The city offers a large pool of potentials for getting close to nature. It is everywhere, in parking lots, next to bike racks. This work is meant to be an impulse to sharpen one's perception and to direct the view on our common existence between man and nature.
The aesthetics of the pure resource is expressed in this work. The plant speaks in its colorfulness to the viewer and is thus perceived in its pure beauty.
Through the traditional technique of color extraction and textile dyeing succeeds the direct path from the plant to the color. The power of color in its resource thus also becomes a carrier of perception. The experience of perceiving the urban space in its color potential automatically connects us as viewers with the plant world of our cities, the viewer becomes curious. Also almost forgotten tequniqzes of arts and crafts are getting in focus

Almost forgotten centuries-old techniques of the natural color dyes in textile are given a voice. As a result of industrialization, extraction from plant dyes plays a subordinate role and has been displaced by chemical dyes. The work should also be the creative added value and the accompanying aesthetics a mouthpiece.
Getting close to the city and its natural potentials is an immense impulse to go into direct contact with our natural environment. To create a possibility to sensitize our consciousness I see in these times as a special challenge in the field of design. However, design is the direct communicator to us sensory beings with our natural environment, with which we need to re-enter into exchange. This work is an impulse to us, to the viewer to gain access to our nature.
The work was created as part of a working grant from the Foundation of Art of Saxony Anhalt and Kloster Bergeschen Stiftung.
The great cultural heritage of natural textile dyeing is the focus of the work. For thousands of years our ancestors were in touch with their natural resources and were conscious in their use. Through industrialization, the manufacturing process now moves far to distant lands and far from sustainable use of resources. The elaboration of ancient textile handicrafts extends through my entire creative work. The intensive examination of urban plants from my close environment brought me into a field of artistic research in combination with old craft techniques and thus leads to the creative process and new paths for us textile designers.
The cooperation between man and nature I see as a great result of the work to share. Modern design methods can only be thought of if we operate them sustainably in the sense of our planet. For this we can also remember old traditional crafts and transport them into our present habitats. The deep collaboration with us designers and the resources is more in focus than ever before.
The cooperation between man and nature is the focus of the work and relies on traditional techniques. The innovative idea is to transport the creative process into our urban living space and make it easy to understand. The creative means of natural coloring becomes a direct communicator in the urban space.
Representing a city map that everyone knows and showing the natural space is the core of the intention. We can identify strongly with the urban space. For me, the view of our districts in the context of the plant world is an inspiring approach to further discovery and makes me curious to explore the city.
The method of exploring a city in its natural resources took place in this project in Halle an der Saale. I see this method as representative technique of exploring every urban space and finding out its color potential. How would Berlin Alexanderplatz shine in color? or St. Mark's Square in Venice?
Our local environment is close to us. In this environment we are in direct contact with each other and can act individually and as a group. So I see the local area as an important step and potential to create a sustainable anchor in our actions. It is important that everyone has the chance to be involved in sustainable action and this is possible in the local context.
