Youth social engagement (formed by students and teachers of the Nikšić School of Economics and Hospitality) implemented the "Green Challenge for All" project, which aims to improve and advance project and field teaching, student and teacher competencies, as well as awareness of the rational use of natural resources. The coordinator of the project is Olivera Lučić, biology professor at the High School of Economics and Hospitality.
The specific goals of the project are:
- teachers get the opportunity to integrate the goals of the UN into teaching subjects and strengthen the competences for education for sustainable development;
- by participating in the Green Challenge, students actively participate in environmental protection activities;
- paying attention to the sustainable development goals of the UN and connecting with them through teaching subjects improves skills and knowledge in all subject areas, including teamwork.
The target group of the project is young people in school, because it is they who will be the bearers of society in 2030, when the results outlined in the COR sub-goals are summarized. The goal of the project is to involve high school students in planning their own future through creative processing of the UN sustainable development goals and engage them to fight for a better world through the popularization of sustainable development goals close to them, entrepreneurial thinking, practical research work and ICT tools. All teachers have the opportunity within the existing school programs and modules and organizational frameworks, whatever those frameworks may be, to find a way to connect teaching content with sustainability and to deal with sustainability topics in an interdisciplinary and cross-curricular manner. We included about 30 teachers with about 850 primary and secondary school students in the project, who worked with the students on the Sustainable Development Goals and implemented small actions in their local communities.
Localization of sustainable development goals
A green and open classroom
Learning outside the classroom by connecting with the local community
Activities of students and teachers, realization of goals in their classes, teachers bring the SDGs closer to students, find ways to connect teaching content with sustainability and deal with sustainability topics in an interdisciplinary way;
Conducting three workshops in each of the four secondary schools in Nikšić, one workshop for teachers and two workshops for students "Localization of Sustainable Development Goals"; "My city, a sustainable city"...
The UN program "2030" envisages the achievement of 17 sustainable development goals with 169 sub-goals that pave the way for global progress in economic and social terms, as well as in the spirit of environmental protection.The target group of the project is young people in school because they will be the bearers of society in 2030. The goal is to involve high school students in planning their own future through creative processing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to involve them in the fight for a better world through the popularization of SDGs, entrepreneurial thinking, practical research, work and ICT tools.Teachers have the opportunity, within existing school programs and modules and organizational frameworks, to find a way to connect teaching content with sustainability and to deal with sustainability topics in an interdisciplinary and cross-curricular way. Sustainability is often equated with ecology. And while environmental sustainability is incredibly important, there is also a social, economic and cultural side to sustainability.Reading the "Sustainability Goals", it might seem to us that some goals deal with issues that are more relevant to one part of the world, while some other goals deal with issues that are a bigger problem elsewhere.But thanks to technology, the economy, the growing number of people and climate change, we are so interconnected that there is no single goal that does not concern us all. Moreover, we will achieve nothing if global coordination is not aligned with local action. All of us who work with children and young people must understand this holistic approach to sustainability so that we can convey it to them and design activities in this direction. Through our project, we tried to equip students and teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for a greener and more sustainable economy and society.
- help schools and teachers to integrate sustainability into teaching and learning and into all aspects
Activities during the project, aesthetics and quality of experience for people:- development and creation of the project's website, creation of the project's Instagram and Facebook pages in order to inform the public about the progress and activities of the project - done by students; - conducting three workshops in each of the four secondary schools in Nikšić, one workshop for teachers and two workshops for students "Localization of Sustainable Development Goals" - members of the local community worked with teachers;
- "A greener and more open classroom", in the courtyards of 4 secondary schools we planted indigenous trees, beautified the space with flowers, creepers, etc., made garbage baskets for the yard, and we hope that this enabled students to have outdoor lectures and more pleasant funerals rest - students and teachers worked;
- activities of students and teachers, teachers bring the SDGs closer to students, so they find ways to connect teaching content with sustainability and to deal with sustainability topics in an interdisciplinary and cross-curricular manner; -students independently participate in the "Green Challenge" working to improve understanding of the SDGs through practical work;
- analysis of student and teacher participation in the challenge; monitoring the activities of everyone individually; teachers sent their lesson preparations, as well as evidence of the realization of lessons with the goals of sustainable development; students documented individual challenges with a photo, video, bill (eg saving water or electricity), which they sent to the project's email;
- announcing the winner of the "Green Challenge" for students and teachers; trip for the winners of the "Green Challenge"; although they were not foreseen in the project activities, the project included primary schools from Nikšić, Podgorica and Bar, as well as secondary schools from Podgorica and Pljevlja, around 30 teachers with around 850 primary and secondary school students
What did the students and teachers do?
The task of the teacher, as a participant in the project, is to organize informative classes, seminars and capacity-building activities. This will enable all students to have an equal initial understanding of the "2030 Agenda", the "Sustainable Development Goals" and their sub-goals.
In the long term, some schools may benefit from developing strong partnerships with the local community, government ministries and professional bodies (such as civil society organisations, international development partners or academia). Such partnerships provide students and teachers with access to expert advice, wider sources of information and training opportunities.
The second part of the task is to choose one or more of the offered goals and mark them with the students in a creative and innovative way (preferably outside the classroom).
We think we have achieved some of the goals, to equip students and teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for a greener and more sustainable economy and society; help schools integrate sustainability into teaching and learning and into all aspects of their business;
create a shared understanding of the deep and transformative changes needed in education and training for sustainability and the green transition
In the project, we included civil society organizations, the NGO "Drumovanja", the Environmental Movement OZON, which deal with environmental protection. During the landscaping of the yard, we included the tenants of the neighboring buildings because they use the school yard for recreation, rest, etc. We hope that their involvement will improve the attitude towards the seedlings in our yard.

Although we envisioned the inclusion of 4 secondary schools in the initiative, about 50 teachers and about 150 students, recognizing the importance of the topic, even though they were not foreseen in the project activities, elementary schools from Nikšić, Podgorica and Bar, as well as secondary schools from Podgorica and Pljevlja, about 30 teachers with about 850 primary and secondary school students. We communicated face-to-face with representatives from our city, and we communicated online with representatives from other cities. Our educators communicated face-to-face with teachers and students, which gave rise to some new acquaintances and initiatives. About 250 trees were planted in the Gymnasium in Nikšić.
-Embodiment of sustainability values: valuing sustainability,
to support justice, conservation of nature
- Acceptance of complexity in sustainability: systemic thinking, critical thinking, problem framing
- Action for sustainability: collective action, individual initiative
-Imagining a sustainable future: climate literacy, adaptability, investigative thinking
We think that all the elements of our initiative can be transferred to other schools, cities and countries because the topic is current, it concerns all the people of the planet; concerns green education, including teacher professional development, mapping approaches to learning for sustainability in school education, synergies between green and digital agendas in school education, green and sustainable learning environments and infrastructure
Priority is given to learning about sustainability in school education, including developing sustainability competencies and skills, promoting positive action on sustainability and addressing environmental concerns, supporting teacher capacity building and whole-school approaches to sustainability. The methodology included face-to-face conversations, PP presentation with sustainable development goals, group work on the topic: My city-sustainable city (for students)
- practical work of students and teachers: in the courtyards of 4 secondary schools we planted indigenous trees, beautified the space with flowers, creepers, etc., made trash baskets for the courtyard.
- students independently participate in the "Green Challenge" working to improve understanding of the SDGs through practical work;
- teachers sent their lesson preparations, as well as evidence of the implementation of lessons with sustainable development goals (photos, learning videos); students documented individual challenges with a photo, video, bill (eg for water or electricity), which they sent to the project email;
- a trip for the winners of the "Green Challenge" to the protected nature facility Gornjepoljski vir.
- to equip students and teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for a greener and more sustainable economy and society
-help education and training schools to integrate sustainability into teaching and learning and into all aspects of their business
- create a shared understanding of the deep and transformative changes needed in education and training for sustainability and the green transition
-make learning for green transition and sustainable development a priority in education and training policies and programs
-to provide all students with opportunities to learn about the climate crisis and sustainability in formal education and informal education (extracurricular activities, work with young people)
-support teachers in developing their knowledge and skills to teach about the climate crisis and sustainability, including dealing with eco-anxiety among their students
-create stimulating learning environments for sustainability that encompass all activities and operations of the educational institution and enable teaching and learning that is practical, interdisciplinary and relevant to the local context
-actively involve students and staff, local authorities, youth organizations and the research and innovation community in learning for sustainability
Progress steps are visible on our project website: https://zeleniizazov.wordpress.com/
We think that this initiative should be continued in the future, better integrate these topics into school curricular and extracurricular activities, train more teachers, create a base of practicing teachers who integrate and study these topics in their classroom and education for a greener future, include green topics/ circular economy, sustainable consumption and the concept of zero waste...
