Garden of Forgotten fruits: Film Dialog is a project that brings different age and level audiovisual artists into dialog with nature through creative processes. Project was inspired by garden of forgotten fruits in Pennabilli that was set by TONINO GUERRA, internationally renowned poet, screenplay writer and artist. "Pennabilli was the Himalaya of my childhood. Why did I come back here? Because it was a kind of lost heaven I wanted to find again. “.

Our initiative called "Film Dialog" is a project inspired by famous filmmaker, poet and artist Tonino Guerra. His work that can be found all over the province of Rimini and should be sought out for its beauty and mysterious charm: parks, fountains, gardens, restaurants and hotels that bear his signature and that he has called The Places of the Soul. They form an itinerary that moves the soul and stimulates the imagination. His legacy, was that what inspired to create a non-formal learning curriculum with an original approach and organize filmmaking camps in Tonino's home city Penabilli where students cound take those routes for soul and imagination. The original project aimed to create a learning curriculum for 9-11th grade students, to get them acquainted with the theory, practice and professions of the creative industries and audio-visual sector. Additionally, an important aim of this project was to include young people experiencing cultural exclusion in the environment where they can become both consumers and creators of quality culture. Whilst creating the methodology, project partners organised the test for kids - a filmmaking camp in Italy. Since the methodology is being finalised and the project has been highly successful between teachers, students and the community, project organizers are aiming to grow this to a much bigger initiative. We believe in continuing this camp, but also building a platform "Film Dialog" with the sustainability idea in mind. Too many great initiatives die too soon and we wish ours to grow bigger, to unite the current similar initiatives and to teach young filmmakers generation the power of pausing, noticing and loving the environment.

The project is inspired by the Garden of Forgotten fruits in Penabilli, Italy, planted by the renowned artist Tonino Guerra. The forgotten varieties of the plants indicate the eternity of culture and art, emphasise the importance of the historical memory of mankind, and represent the leading role of modern society in the protection of flora and fauna. It brilliantly helped us to shape the idea of the filmmaking camp by combining the film industry education with the core values of loving the nature. We believe teaching sustainability should go hand in hand with teaching young people to stop, to notice what's around them, to try and see the beauty in it. With that comes respect, with the respect comes love and sustainable care comes out of it naturally.
The filmmaking camp has been set in the Penabilli, Italy, a little town in which the community is small but tight. Combining the old generation of Penabilli citizens, which is very close to nature and have been very curious about the filmmaking camp with the young generation of future filmmakers has been beneficial to both sides. The project looks at the problem of sustainability holistically. The film industry can be very wasteful. We believe in teaching the new generation of talents from the beginning: to look deeply into the nature, into the community. With the love for it, it is so much easier to speak about the sustainability. Penabilli served not only as a perfect example of the sustainable and loving community but it is also a home of Tonino Guerra. We have used his home-museum for lectures thus keeping his memory alive, his museum buzzing with young ideas and allowing young students to get inspired by the buildings and places that have seen the greatest artists of our time.
An important aim of this project is to include young people experiencing cultural exclusion in the environment where they can become both consumers and creators of quality culture. We aimed for this project to be as accessible as possible. Hence in Lithuania we have collaborated with two organisations. Meno Avilys, is one of them, they organize film education classes in rural Lithuanian cities. With them we were able to reach those who usually have less access to invite into our camp in Italy. Another collaborator of ours was Skalvija film school. With them we reached the most aspiring future filmmakers who are already well versed in industry at a young age. The third group of kids came from Catania, Liceo Artistico. They had a passion for arts but less means to travel or hire courses. So it was a perfect blend of different people to meet each other and learn from each other. As for accessibility, we have funded main expenditures with the help of Erasmus+ funding. Within the framework of the project, with the help of the expertise of experts and foreign partners, we managed include interdisciplinary work with young people experiencing exclusion due to geographical location, belonging to an ethnic group and economic situation. We believe that our project idea in innovative, beneficial and will have a long-lasting effects for the target groups and the community as well.
The city of Penabilli is a perfect example of a little town with a close community. The is one ice cream shop, one pharmacy, one of everything - just enough but not too much. Everyone knows each others name. So it was very safe space to organize a camp. On another hand 15 young kids were very well seen. The community of which many people were friends of Tonino Guerra were happy that his legacy is alive, his museum is buzzing with new voices and ideas. We have included them into all events, the guides, the screenings. They also picked their winners and awarded with prizes. On the other hand for the young people it was a great way to show the place, where life is calm and quite, were they can finally stop and listen to nature, to their own ideas. Majority of their films focused on sustainability problems and allowed the community of Penabilli to have a fresh look at those and brought the discussions to the table.
The project aims to achieve a multi-layered impact, from the individual development of participants and their communities, to the regional, national and international development of the participating countries.
We have included local, regional and European stakeholders into the initiave.
European funding Erasmus+ helped us to move forward with idea, to create methodology and organize first filmmaking camp in Italy.
We collaborated with Serbian film center, Lithuanian organizations as well as Italian ones to include diverse voices.
As for the local inclusion, Penabilli city with its mayor was active during the initiave and helped us with the planning.
Audiovisual industry and nature observing, as well as building community.
By having a real opportunity to practice film-making development young people will develop audio-visual media literacy and technical skills.
All the methodology is build around observing nature, it is not so usually or popular in young generation, so we try to bring back - seeing and noticing.
Initiative takes place in very rural place - village without any city-life infrastructure, for many of kids it is a new thing - once a week happening markets, where you have to buy everything, going to neighbours to ask for things you need, working on garden and etc.
Along with other international tutors, kids will be creating short documentary films and learning to pause and to notice things. We believe that there are many programmes but not enough of them invite young people to not rush but to pause. Our program is a slow filmmaking program which invites people to do exactly that. Not to rush, to notice the unseen, to enjoy the moment, to get lost and allow the world to become larger than ones knowledge of it. To let go of control.
Quality media literacy and film education projects are more difficult to access for youth living in region because they are carried out in metropolitan areas or are not financially accessible to participants from low-income families. Lack of knowledge and experience in this sector makes it difficult for any young person to find out and attend the universities they want, as such information must first be obtained and only then young people can decide if they want to go deeper into this sector or no. We also noticed that the lack of activities that actively involve young people in the creative process develops the passive
user, which negatively contributes to the exclusion of the individual in the community, promotes a sense of hopelessness. Additionally, we will share our projects'
results with schools, teachers, head teachers working in a school in one of the European countries involved through eTwinning platform. We believe that it will help to inspire teachers, and those who implementing extra-curriculum activities to organize activities for their students aiming to develop their high-quality arts and cultural knowledge. Also the filmmaking camp can be redone in other museums-houses of renowned filmmakers. We believe it sustainably combines the young and the old, allowing us to learn from each other, rather than to wastefully forget and only make new.
The filmmaking camp "Film Dialog" was implemented as a test of the methodology that we are creating with our partners. It was so successful that we wish to grow this project into a yearly initiative. The methodology is now being finalised. The main goal when creating it was to offer a contrast to the usual approaches - offer some stillness and teaching the kids art of noticing. All tasks and main activities was planned around that - how to pause, notice what is around us and document it. We had Tonino Guerra's wife and poet Lora Guerra as a teacher as well as great rising filmmakers and producers Beniamino Barrese, Elena Kairyte, Ruta Jekentaite and anthropologist Ruta Kiaupaite. experiences. The program developed during the project will be designed to be adapted for schools or organisations working with extracurricular activities, this program will focus on the youth which are facing social exclusion, living in rural areas, have less opportunities than others and fewer accessibility to cultural events and activities. The main goal is to share it, to make it usable as well as to collaborate closely with other institutions working on the same matters and to combine rather than separate.
The project invites its participant to pause and notice what's around them. By doing so it tackles the problem of wild and reckless globalisation, causing climate crisis, depression and lonelines. We aim to train a new filmmakers generation with the values of community, care of nature and each other.
Both teaching methodology and filmmaking camps are planned carefully and slowly, inviting to do everything thoughtfully, not rushing and notice.
The project itself - building a methodology is almost completed. There are now final corrections being made and the project will be finished by May. However, the filmmaking camp which was initially a test for methodology has been such a great success that there is a clear need to make it a regular thing. It was loved by both students and the community. Penabilli offers infrastructure and calmness to continue this project. Hence the project partners are now looking to find new ways to both continue the camp whilst keeping it accessible.
Our project equips learners by the original methodology an attitude of loving the nature. The methodology is being shared with educators who can teach it themselves. We believe in combining and uniting the current programmes hence are speaking and collaborating with many innitiatives now and looking to build a platform in the future so no young peoples films are lost and methodologies can be shared between teachers worldwide.
