The project of La Jaira de Ana "OCIRIF" (Responsible, Egalitarian and Family Leisure) is a project that was born to generate spaces free of gender violence. For the development of the project, the collaboration of municipal services and/or non-profit entities on the island of Gran Canaria is necessary, since they are the ones who refer the families to La Jaira de Ana.
The project has been developed between the months of May and December 2022 and a total of 77 families have participated, including 77 women victims of gender violence under 36 years of age and 105 boys and girls exposed to the same situation.
They have come by derivative groups, a total of 11 groups from the municipalities of the island of Gran Canaria where they have attended the farm for 4 days and a total of 4 hours a day. They will work separately:
On the one hand, the women carry out psycho-emotional sessions with a psychologist and workshops on the transformation of local products with an artisan. And, on the other hand, the boys and girls are with leisure and free time monitors carrying out activities on the farm.
The project includes transportation and snacks. In addition, there is coordination with the security forces to guarantee the peace of mind of the women, since they are a sensitive group.

In terms of sustainability, specifically social sustainability, the following objectives are proposed, on the one hand, the rehabilitation of support networks based on healthy leisure activities and the reinforcement of links connected with the natural environment, which allow the family to enjoy of a space free of violence, promoting family well-being, rapprochement through animals and space for the development of social and emotional skills. On the other hand, create a space for women to share through the creation of workshops related to the primary sector, where they can learn to make products, while their sons and daughters play and actively participate on the farm.
To this end, the following workshops with women are proposed:
- Socio-emotional workshops (directed by a psychologist) in which knowledge of aptitudes and skills for the strengthening of women, personal and social skills, communication and listening and entrepreneurship will be worked on.
- Natural cosmetics workshop (in charge of an artisan) in which guided meditation and aromatherapy will be worked on with women and the preparation of a goat's milk soap and a cream serum that involves self-care strategies and also personal entrepreneurship.
With the boys and girls:
- Workshops to work the wool (in charge of an artisan) where you learn patience, care, teamwork and learning the processes for a beautiful final result.
- Leisure and free time workshops (in charge of monitors) in which they will work with boys and girls through an approach to animals, personal relationships, social and affective skills.
In general, the project is framed within the following objective: to promote spaces for positive coexistence in connection with nature to strengthen the bonds of mothers who are victims of gender violence with their sons and daughters, and the following specific objectives:
1.1. Develop socio-emotional workshops or transformation of local products among young mothers who are victims of gender violence to promote self-esteem and socio-emotional aspects.
1.2. Generate playful spaces for boys and girls to enjoy responsible, environmental and educational leisure.
1.3. Organize awareness days on the importance of natural spaces as a uniting tool for families that have suffered violence, and to make visible the primary sector as a professional opportunity.
With which, the main thing about the project is to create positive emotions in families, respect for themselves and the environment, spaces where they feel safe and breathe the freedom of nature and above all, instill in them self-care towards oneself.
This has been attempted through workshops (described in the previous section), leisure activities and free time through awareness days. These conferences have been held one at the beginning of the project to disseminate it and request the collaboration of organizations and non-profit associations on the island of Gran Canaria, and one at the end of the project to show its results. This was intended to emphasize the importance of this type of social projects in natural environments.
The project is subsidized by the General Directorate for Youth of the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth of the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, charged to the funds of the State Pact against Gender Violence.
Being a 100% subsidized project, it does not imply any cost for the participating families, women, children. Transportation service, snacks and 100% free activities are offered. As in the rest of the activities and services that we offer on our farm, the Jaira de Ana space is fully accessible, the routes are wide and free of obstacles, allowing anyone to take the tour and access our facilities without any problem. In addition, the transports are also adapted to any type of disability or incapacity.
The workshops that were carried out related and linked to the primary sector have been a fundamental instrument for the empowerment of mothers and, in the case of their sons and daughters, the connection with the animal has been a discovery towards meanings of care and of self care.
This project has made it possible to contribute to the development and strengthening of families, both as a whole and individually. On the one hand, the mothers have felt supported, safe, they have generated new ties of support among the group, they have aroused new incentives, including work, and on the other hand, the girls and boys have enjoyed themselves, they have generated a special bond with the animal, developing and learning compassion and respect towards these, basic values to learn to live in community.
Finally, awakening in young women victims of gender violence that there are other agricultural spaces where they can promote their self-esteem, where they can vent and discover new potential, is a key factor for the future rural development of women, since they are agents of socio-economic change: "Empowering this group is not only essential for the well-being of individuals, families and rural communities, but also for general economic productivity, given the large presence of women in the global agricultural workforce" (UN Women).
The La Jaira de Ana project "OCIRIF" (Responsible, Egalitarian and Family Leisure) is subsidized by the State Pact against Gender Violence to be developed in collaboration with the General Directorate for Youth of the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth of the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, charged to the funds of the State Pact against Gender Violence.
The project is executed under a social discipline because the manager of Jaira de Ana and promoter of this project is a social worker. It is a project with a fundamental methodology in self-care, sustainability and creating safe environments for vulnerable families.
Space is the center of the personal transformation of each one. On the one hand, through interventions based on the person with different workshops and self-care dynamics based on sustainable products and from the primary sector, and on the other hand, the girls and boys have interventions focused on the animal to promote the values of respect and care among all. It is a social, educational and therapeutic discipline, encompassed in a rural and agricultural environment as possibilities for personal and professional development.
In the development of the project, a minimum of 11 groups from different parts of the island had been reached. 11 groups were formed in which they attended the La Jaira de Ana school farm 4 days per group and 4 hours each day. A total of 44 days and 44 hours. With which 100% of the forecast has been met. A total of 77 women victims of gender violence under the age of 36 and 105 girls and boys between 6 months and 16 years old exposed to the same situation with a participation of 61%. 100% of the proposed objectives and activities have been met.
In addition, in the results of satisfaction in the surveys that were carried out at the end of the sessions, 100% detail repeating again and value the space, place and professionals positively.
From the point of view of innovation, this project offers a plus. The entire project is developed in a natural, open space, where families are allowed their spaces and times, where processes are respected, which ultimately makes the project have positive results. In addition, it is directed by a young woman in a highly masculinized sector.
In La Jaira de Ana and for the development of the projects that take place here we have an active and participatory methodology, where the participating people are the protagonists of their learning and change. We intend to provide the necessary tools so that they are truly responsible for their learning and change throughout the process.
We believe in the importance of nature as agents of change.
The project itself can be transferred to any other island as long as there is a rural space, the municipalities and entities collaborate in the referrals of the families. This year, a project will be created to extrapolate it to the rest of the Canary Islands in shorter periods. Artisans, psychologists from the islands will be sought and they will be trained in a gender perspective to be able to apply this project satisfactorily.
With this project we intend to contribute to gender equality, one of the desGender equality, in addition to being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies, with full human potential and capable of developing sustainably. In addition, it has been shown that the empowerment of women stimulates productivity and economic growth.
