Cantico Festival, organized by the Cromo association with the artistic direction of Anna Redi, is a three-day journey of theatre, storytelling, music, contemporary dance and conferences with artists from all over Italy and abroad.
Events held outdoors, completely free and open to the public, in the splendid setting of Piazza San Giovanni Battista, in the historic center of the municipality of Casperia.
An opportunity for recollection and socializing around the theme of art, in perfect eco-sustainability and without the assistance of any type of electrical or electronic equipment, immersed in the beauty of the surrounding environment and accompanied by the sound frequencies of the natural background.
Cantico Festival is the way through which the community comes together in the magical atmosphere of artistic languages and storytelling, and becomes the pretext for a new and precious encounter between the resident population and the changing and transient community of tourists, both Italian and foreign, who every more year they discover the still uncontaminated wonders of the Sabine hills and the Farfa Valley.
We want to promote an idea of "quality tourism", getting in touch with the place through the artistic form and its different languages, verbal and non-verbal (theater, dance, music, etc.), and of "sustainable fruition": all the events of the Festival will be realized by exploiting the natural daylight and the acoustics of the
spaces of the village, thus avoiding the use of electric light and amplification instruments. The decision to organize the event completely in acoustics and in dialogue with the different shades of daylight responds both to the need to return to the intimacy of the relationship between people, and to promote a sustainable and ecological model in the enjoyment of art.

Cantico Festival promotes a model of sustainable art enjoyment without electrical devices, avoiding the use of amplifications or electric lights and making use exclusively of daylight and the natural amplification that the architecture of the village already offers.
We strongly believe in the value of popular science and how experts on these fields can make a difference in our society. To lead people towards critical and conscious thinking is a mission of utmost importance, therefore we want to be at the forefront of this change. For these reasons we intend to address the theme of the fight against climate change not only through plays and performative events but also through moments of meeting and reflection on the theme of sustainability to understand how we can, in the practicality of our lives, be part of the change. We would like to raise awareness on new possible ways to relate to nature, organizing conferences with experts on organic agriculture, biodynamic, synergy and permaculture.
In addition, for the next edition we’d like to introduce food sustainability with the help of Recup association, a group that wants to fight food waste. In the markets they recover unsold food, select it and share it with all the people participating in the business.
We want to further a new lifestyle based on different rhythms and sensorial stimulation through models of "quality tourism", "sustainable fruition" and “participatory art”.
Our purposes are:
- Promoting the territory by intercepting and channeling the routes of tourism directed to the nearby capital;
- Contributing to the economic development of the territory with an artistic and cultural proposal that develops a network, intercepts new audiences and creates profit for the commercial activities in the territory;
- Participate in the challenge of environmental sustainability and enhance the natural landscape and the very rich local vegetation, a source of inspiration and purification from lifestyles that cause suffering to nature and human beings.
Our concept provides:
- immersive nature experiences such as trekking, bird-watching, sensory walk in order to value the extraordinary beauty of the territory, which is often overlooked and underestimated due to the proximity to the capital;
- plays and non-verbal performance (like concert and dance-performance to engage the foreign community too) about identity and initiatory stories from the world
- photographic exhibitions;
- spiritual and healthy activities such as yoga, tai chi, feldenkrais;
- workshops and conferences about science and sustainability (food waste, bioplastics, permaculture, biodynamic agriculture) and creativity (singing, dancing, painting, writing).
One of the essential points is to make the festival free, so that everyone can enjoy it. We believe that culture should not be exclusive to the upper class, but a tool capable of creating bonds between people. One of the issues that the Sabina territory suffers is the isolation between the various municipalities which are not well connected with each other. Over time we would like that this cultural offer could give the opportunity in the future to unite the various villages and to push the political and municipal institutions to invest in public transport between them. In this sense we are already trying to expand the reality of the festival by doing various actions and small interventions including, in addition to Casperia, the towns of Roccantica and Montasola. For the next edition we are organizing a series of experiential activities, from walks in the woods to multidisciplinary workshops, from meetings with artists to conferences on issues related to sustainability and social inclusion, with the aim of broadening the reference target of our activities and involve an increasingly large portion of the local population and tourists.
Other objectives in terms of inclusion:
- Promote dialogue between different cultures through the participation of artists with a multicultural background or from other countries, to contribute to the diffusion of peace, understanding and solidarity among people.
- Offer opportunities for social and cultural aggregation and growth paths for adolescents and new generations, through participation in quality multidisciplinary cultural events and active involvement in the organization of events, in order to implement a sense of local roots and prevent forms of talent drain.
The type of impact we want to make through the festival is divided into several levels. For the organization of the event we involved some local realities of volunteers including the Pro Loco of Casperia and the Youth Committee of Casperia. Thanks to their help, we were able to mobilize the locals and start a long-term collaboration that is not limited to the festival.
We also found great interest from other local organizations such as the country band and majorettes who will take an active part in the organization.
Another point of involvement and how local citizens have lent part of their homes, balconies, porches and gardens, to host small events and performances.
In addition, local and external people of all ages will benefit from seminars and workshops organized by various experts in various fields such as: bioplastics, cooking, qi gong, yoga, acting courses, singing and other experiential activities.
Those who are going to participate in the creative workshops will be given the possibility to be involved in some of the performances in the festival.
In the last edition we received support from “Fondazione Varrone” a non-profit private savings bank committed to support projects aimed at the protection and preservation of the local artistic and historical heritage and the environment, and projects of social utility and promotion of economic development. Thanks to them we have received monetary support equal to five thousand euros and also help in communication.
In addition, we have also received help from the municipality of Casperia, the youth committee of Casperia, the local company Sabina Conglomerati, A.L.A. and OBOP association, La Torretta B&B, Il gelso nero restaurant, Ecofattorie farmhouse, Pro loco of Casperia.
All these organizations and private activities have coordinated to support us in communication, advertising and various economic aid.
For the next edition we are in dialogue with ATCL (Theatrical Association of the Municipalities of Lazio), which is an organization of distribution, promotion and training of the public and a multidisciplinary circuit (theater, dance, music) recognised by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MIBACT) and the Lazio Region. We are planning a long-term action on Sabine territory for the coming years, in order to bring a quality cultural offer in a place overshadowed by the nearby capital.
In our Festival multidisciplinarity is a strong matrix. The network of professionals in which we are involved boasts the presence of different disciplines, from sound designers to architects, performers and directors of photography, agronomists, musicians and landscape designers.. This network, placed in a position to create a dialogue where everyone is involved, is one of the cornerstones of the concept and development of our festival. Particular importance was given to sound studies, carried out by sound designers, musicians, architects and performers with the use of voice to ensure that the sound does not disperse running through the alleys of the old town but arrives clear to the viewer. Another important study is the one about light, conducted by directors of photography, by the performers and the landscape in order to exploit the natural light to the maximum of our possibilities and enhancing the architecture and the lines of the landscape with the same primary objective, create the best possible viewing experience for the audience. In addition to this the other experts have contributed to a training of the public even before the festival to establish relations with the population by making it participate through the oral transmission of historical events in the Sabine territory. The added value is obviously the commitment of a community of artists and entertainment professionals who are committed to giving the population and the public the best cultural offer possible while remaining faithful to sustainable and social values that can lay the foundations of a long and even more multidisciplinary path.
In the context of the festival we are trying to spread, through theatrical representation, music and dance, values such as: reconnection and contemplation of nature and a newfound sense of connection with the community. To do this we use and are inspired by ancient philosophies aimed at the improvement and development of human consciousness. An example among all was the lecture-show by Massimiliano Ciciva "The angel and the fly" held in the last edition. Specifically he was inspired by the current of Sufism, an ancient philosophy and discipline that has its roots in the Middle East, finding in the last century much space in the international cultural panorama, which aims at knowledge and self-improvement. By virtue of the universal character of this intent, we intend to promote and cultivate solid relationships with subjects and artists from other countries, giving an international aspect to the festival and making it a distinctive feature in the Sabine, regional and national panorama.
The performances of our festival have very few technical requirements, for this reason they can be adapted to the most various places, such as schools, libraries, squares, villages. One of the elements of our festival that we would like to see be taken as an example is how you can make art with nothing: no scenography, artificial light, electronic sound or stage, just the artist, the audience and the space around them. So it’s very easy to think about how to transfer and replicate artistic works in other contexts.
In addition to this our research as a collective is focused, as well as on the role that art and culture play for us in society, towards new possible, more sustainable lifestyles and in contact with nature.
We have known many companies and groups of people already engaged for years on this research, experts in organic agriculture, biodynamic, synergy and permaculture, especially in the Tuscany region. We would like the festival to become an opportunity to share and spread the new methods used today to cultivate in a natural way, as well as a way to raise awareness about food waste.
It would be a sort of exchange of good practices, in the future being able to expand this network between festivals in central Italy to raise awareness of the public.
We imagine that in the next editions the festival can host stands of researchers, scientists, farmers who can promote their ideas on the topic and share with the public other possible lifestyles.
Our project was born in a small reality but despite this we had to face challenges much bigger than us, we do not struggle to recognize them as global challenges. The same dynamics occur in both micro and macro, such as food waste, light and noise pollution, social inequality and finally limited accessibility to knowledge of distant cultures both in time and space. Together with our partners, we discussed how to address these issues and tried to solve each of these problems at their root. With partner Recup, an association that fights in the forefront the waste of food in the markets of large cities, we thought of reworking the discarded food that has lost economic value by giving it new social value. We will also host local companies with their products at zero km. Thanks to them we can give food that has lost economic value new social value. For the pollution challenge we wanted to give a clean cut, the festival and all the performances will not have the possibility of lighting technology and amplification so it will be totally acoustic impacting in the least possible way. Another problem is social inequality, at a critical moment and exit from an emergency both health and economic we wanted to give a clear signal, culture can no longer accommodate concepts such as classism must be accessible to all and free of charge since we believe that knowledge is the only weapon against ignorance so we have made the festival totally free and accessible to all through funding of third parties.
