The Ozbič Barbershop is one of Slovenia's best preserved skilled tradesmen's shops from the period before World War II. The idea to preserve and revive it was a long time in the making. By taking into account the preserved equipment and furnishings in the barbershop and other rooms, it was possible to plan and
carry out the renovation of the house in a way that gave it a touch of heritage and also made it modern enough to conduct the barber's trade and host other events.
The renovated barbershop exterior features a recognisable facade design, which has remained largely unchanged for decades except for a few shades of colour. Typical door and windows have been preserved and the facade signage has been recreated – for the first time in the barbershop's history all the signage is now in Slovenian. The barbershop interior features most of the preserved equipment, which was brought into the barbershop gradually – some of it when the barbershop was opened in 1924, some of it later during a complete renovation in 1936 and the rest of it in the period leading up to the mid-1960s, when the first
automatic washing machines were added. The renovated barbershop furniture and equipment will in the future perform its basic function, and as a whole it will also present various development stages in the barbershop's history which depended on the general technological advancements.

The revitalization of a degraded building in the city center aimed at sustainable renovation of both the interior and exterior of the building. Since the building is protected as a settlement heritage, the renovation took place in accordance with the guidelines of the Institute for Cultural Heritage, which means that natural and local materials were used for the renovation. With the help of the management plan and the implementation of green technologies (mainly heating and lighting of the premises), we aimed to achieve the highest possible energy efficiency of the facility.
With the project, we also contribute to the preservation of natural heritage, as the artisan or craftsman once used the raw materials and resources that were available in the local environment. The creativity of the masters of the past was connected with the natural environment where he lived, the resources were used expediently and prudently.
The revitalization of one of the oldest houses in the city of Postojna contains all aspects of modern heritage protection and goes beyond the protection of the more than 100-year-old building and the objects located in it. By taking into account the spatial integrity and values of the local cultural environment, the project connects the knowledge of basic disciplines (archaeology, architecture, ethnology, history, technical history, art history and urban history) to special knowledge and theoretical approaches in conservation, restoration and ethnology. During the project we created unique spaces: 1.) a barbershop where the old trade of barbering continues and 2. a social space with a permanent ethnological exhibition, which also received the prestigious Murko Prize, awarded by the Slovenian Ethnological Society. The biggest aesthetic aspect of the renovation of the building is precisely in preserving its authenticity from the time between the two world wars. With restoration and conservation works, we succeeded in completely restoring the Barbershop space, while with innovative design, we created an additional space that expresses/reflects memories, local identity, dialogue and creativity of the historical space
The project made it possible to revive and preserve the activities that support the successful business operation of the barbershop in the future, which enrich the business and tourist activities in the city center. Visitors to the salon are locals and tourists who are proud of their place and heritage. In the renovation of the house, we create unique conditions for a new company on the one hand; on the other hand, the project represents a good practice for all Slovenian municipalities, how access to knowledge about heritage for entrepreneurs can contribute to the development of new, innovative products and services with added value. The local population and visitors to the Municipality of Postojna can get to know the heritage of the century-old barbershop and have a direct experience of meeting the past in it, as the facility is open to the public and the ethnological exhibition viewing services are free for all visitors to the barbershop.
The ideals, principles and values that are part of the local cultural heritage create a common source of memory, understanding and local identity. Investing in the protection of local heritage is inextricably linked to the regulation of the local living environment. By revitalizing both the exterior and the interior of the house, we not only extended the life of the old house, but also gave it new utility and preserved the old craft activity that has accompanied the local population for three generations. During the project, we established conditions for the creation of new jobs, developed products and services based on heritage. All this will bring added value to social life and the economy. In the new premises, the Museum of the Karst, Postojna is carrying out a developmental and didactic program of domestic and artistic crafts aimed at vulnerable groups, which is useful for the implementation of the museum's program even after the completion of the project. The workshops emphasize the environmental aspect, sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Vulnerable groups, especially children and young people, acquire new knowledge and skills as part of the workshops, forge new ties and thus more easily connect/identify with the local cultural heritage.
As part of the project, we encouraged the development (innovative) orientation of the actors. In the involvement of key local stakeholders in the project (LAG DRPSN, Municipality of Postojna; Zavod Znanje Postojna, public institution; RRA Zeleni kras, with the cooperation of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage), we upgraded traditional crafts or indigenous cultural heritage with modern knowledge of conservation in a developmental and innovative way. , museum professionals and business and marketing content.
Architectural heritage buildings, due to their character and history (material and construction), offer many challenges in diagnosis and restoration, as they limit the application of modern legal regulations and construction standards. Recommendations are desired and necessary to ensure meaningful methods of analysis and thoughtful interventions appropriate to the cultural context. Therefore, as part of the project, a consortium of experts from the fields of restoration, conservation, ethnography, museum, architecture, interior design, tourism and entrepreneurship was formed. The result of this cooperation is a renovated building of cultural heritage, which today is considered a representative building both for professionals in the field of cultural preservation and for all local administrative units in Slovenia, because the house is not only renovated, but a new entrepreneurial activity lives successfully in it in coexistence with a new public space.
• Joint plan for the development of traditional crafts and design plan for craft tourism.
• Renovated interior of the barbershop in accordance with conservation and restoration standards, which will be a point of use, meeting and socializing for locals and tourists.
• Brochure about the barber and hairdressing salon Ozbič - as a souvenir, ID card of the salon, for tourists and locals
• Business plan of operation of the barbershop.
• The marketing plan for the operation of the barbershop will ensure the successful operation and promotion of the salon, within the plan at least one promotional program will be implemented for the duration of the project.
• Established service/product based on the tradition of the barbershop.
• The didactic program of the Museum of Karst aimed at vulnerable groups in the field of domestic and artistic crafts
The multidimensional approach of reviving the spaces makes the project solutions and approaches sustainable and innovative. The renovated house is a location with strong emotional connotations by the local population that needed a new purpose and revival. We could only achieve this by establishing an innovative consortium, which created the conditions for the vertical pursuit of goals (municipality, local delivery partners and local entrepreneurs) and horizontally by the harmonization and participation of various (above-mentioned) institutions.
The implementation of project was an encouragement for our municipality to create taylor-made solutions for abandoned /poorly used spaces. The project proposes a solution with a strong, dynamic and open revitalization process that involved multidisciplinary approaches and innovative methods. Experimenting these new form of cooperation and local engagement lead us to discover new approaches of space design and in developing new business ideas to encourage and motivate young entrepreneurs to start they own business, that appreciate and builds on the local cultural heritage
The proposed solution can be transferred or replicated in different local context: the features and basic conditions are mainly those related to the typology of cities (size does not matter). For the transfer, the human resources in the city are not excessively burdening but there is the need of a revitalization of heritage spaces (in door or out-door) that other urban authorities should ensure in order to replicate the project in their local context. The project could be transferred also to different regions.
The other urban authorities should ensure multi-institutional horizontal cooperation on the local, regional and national level as well as vertical cooperation with the local stake holders and delivery partners.
As a result of the project, we pursued both local, regional and national strategic policies of urban and rural development, as well as European ones. Above all, Specific objective 5.1 "Fostering the integrated and inclusive social, economic and environmental development, culture, natural heritage, sustainable tourism and security in urban areas" (Europe closer to citizens).
By pursuing global challenges, forming a development consortium and implementing local importance and history in the implementation of the project, we managed to create:
- Rehabilitation of open space in an urban area
- Local development of traditional crafts and a community-led design plan
- Stakeholders involved in the preparation and implementation of activities that support the development of new SMEs, business ideas and new jobs in our area.
