This project was triggered by the Corona virus world crisis in response to social distance instruction, encouraging social decentralisation and increasing the demand to move out of the city. Out of the belief that climate change is still the major challenge we are facing (humans and nature), we wish to promote relevant, realistic subjects in the daily urban plan discussion and bring interdisciplinary voices into the architectural fields.

  • Description of the initiative
And The City is an interdisciplinary, international group studies the relationship between the urban environment and it’s user, tackling issues such as sustainability, inclusivity, pandemic, politics, and nature. The initiatives uses computational and digital tools and invites experts from other fields and collect input in an open – shared manner in order to engage the public and relate to real life situations from all life aspects in order to challenge future urban planner and inspire redevelopment of existing traditional settings.
The output of the study is shared online in form of articles and podcast-shared in 6 platform including Spotify and apple podcast. Targeting students, professional, and community as readers and listeners, the study group aims to explore contemporary issues placing it in regional context to inspire listeners with its research and to carry the tools and knowledge to implement it in further academics research or future realised projects.

Our experts includes Academics that specialize in City Politics from Tel Aviv, an Online Petition Regional Director from Jakarta, a published author that research the importance of public toilet for women that based on Canada and other speakers with unique background. Aside to that, the group also sees the problem through the lenses of two main researcher located in Berlin and Jakarta, convinced that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. The current listeners are distributed all around the world (Germany, United States, Indonesia, Spain, Thailand, Italy, France, and others).

In the future And The City aims to increase listeners by adding sources that includes academics, government, business and other sources with distinct perspective on the city; increasing the quality of the research, podcast and engagements with listener not only via digital platform such as social media and websites, but also offline meeting such as hosting international workshops and execution (built) of urban projects.

The Initiative promotes design with nature, which goes beyond avoiding harm and actively works to heal the environment. This approach includes looking into existing situations and finding ways to improve or reuse them in an up-cycled manner. For example, this could involve repurposing an abandoned industrial site into a public park or green space, or finding ways to reuse grey-water in irrigation systems. By repurposing and reusing existing resources, we can minimize the need for new development and reduce our impact on the environment.

The Initiative also addresses social issues that may impact these efforts, such as inequality and lack of access to better education, work, and green spaces. The platform provides strategies for addressing these issues and creating more inclusive and sustainable communities.

Another key aspect of designing with nature is improving the urban lifestyle to make cities more appealing than rural areas and so, we can reduce our environmental footprint. This can be achieved through a variety of strategies, such as promoting sustainable transportation options, creating more green spaces and parks, and encouraging the development of walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods. By making cities more liveable and attractive, we can reduce the pressure to develop rural areas and preserve natural habitats.
By promoting design with nature, repurposing and reusing existing resources, and addressing social issues, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable future for all.
The discussion taking place in different mediums allows for a wider audience to consume and interact with the information in their preferred manner. One popular medium for this type of discussion is podcasts. Podcasts are easy and convenient to consume, making them an appealing option also for busy people who can consume the content while commuting, walking their dog, or engaging in other activities.

This accessibility and flexibility make podcasts a popular medium for learning outside the classroom and sharing knowledge with others. Additionally, podcast can be easily subscribed and downloaded, people can choose to listen to them at their own pace and convenience, it also allows for easy sharing with friends and family, making it an excellent medium for community learning and knowledge dissemination.

Podcasts sees no geographic boarders and can cover a wide range of topics. It can be produced by experts or enthusiasts in the field and can be a great way to stay informed, learn something new or gain inspiration to be used in varied ways such as constructed urban projects.
"And The City" aims to promote sustainability, inclusivity, and equity in urban design by publishing content on various digital platforms such as website, podcast, and social media. Our goal is to create an open space for discussion on contemporary urban issues that affect marginalised groups, such as low-income communities, gender or racially disenfranchised, and people with disabilities.

One of the major focuses of our Initiative is on densification, equitable development, and inclusive design in cities. We believe that these are crucial elements for creating more sustainable, liveable and equitable cities. We aim to raise awareness on the importance of these issues and the ways in which they affect marginalised groups.

Furthermore, we believe that providing a platform for dialogue on these topics is vital for creating a more democratic society with equal access to resources for all citizens. We want to create a space for people to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns about urban design, and to have them considered by urban planners and decision-makers.

Our platform is unique in its approach by focusing on the positive possible outcome of implementation of aspects such as inclusivity, equity, and sustainability in urban design, as well as creating a space for dialogue and engagement for marginalised groups to place feedback from their own experience. We believe that by raising awareness and promoting discussion on these issues, we can contribute to creating more liveable, sustainable and equitable cities for all.
And The City aim to have a direct communication with the general public and having an indirect effect on the education of planners and raising awareness in the political sector. The platform is interactive and allows the general citizen to select a topic to research and bring awareness to. This way, the general public can actively engage in the urban planning process and have their voices heard.

We also avoid using professional terms and instead opts for a relatable tone, making it accessible to not only professionals but also any urban space user who is interested in one or more topics. This approach is meant to include a wide range of people and create an inclusive space for discussion and engagement.

By using an interactive platform, the general public can share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns with professionals and decision-makers. And The City is a space for citizens to share their thoughts and ideas and to have them considered. It allows citizens to be part of the decision-making process, and to educate themselves on the topic and share how it affects them and educate others.

We aims to bridge the gap between the general public and urban planners by providing a space for discussion and engagement. By avoiding professional terms and keeping the general tone relatable, the platform is able to include not only professionals but any urban space user who is interested in one or more topics. It is an effective way for people to be informed, educated and be part of the urban planning process.

In the future we hope to be able to apply our professional knowledge alongside the knowledge we gain in the research into execution of international urban projects (built). We believe the growth of our current project will lead us naturally to take situations we confront with in our research and improve them according to the guidelines appear in our research.
The two main researchers for the initiative are located in two different continents, coming from different cultures and religious backgrounds. They edit and produce the podcast, articles, and social media engagements for the platform. This diversity of perspectives and backgrounds allows for a unique and inclusive approach to the research and discussions on the platform.

Both of the main researcher maintains their professional work as an architects in their home country. One owns an architectural office where people from different countries take part in the research phase, bringing local input and perspectives from their country of origin; The other owns architectural office while also maintaining an academic career. This approach allows for a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of the issues being discussed on the platform.

Additionally, the platform features guests from different countries, continents and cultures who share their own research or work experience in the podcast during discussions or interviews. This allows for a diverse range of perspectives and ideas to be shared and discussed on the platform.

The initiative currently collaborates with UrbanNext to publish the articles and podcast, sharing it with a large community of professionals and students from the planning discipline. This collaboration allows for a wider audience to access and engage with the content on the platform, and contributes to the education of planners and raising awareness in the political sector.

In summary, the platform is unique in its approach by having two main researchers located in different continents, coming from different cultures and religious backgrounds, collaborating with people from different countries and featuring guests from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, working in collaboration with UrbanNext to share the content to a wide audience. All of this allows for a comprehensive, inclusive and diverse approach to urban planning discussion.
And The City has invited a diverse group of experts to share their knowledge and insights on a variety of topics that relates to Urbanism. For example, one of the experts we have invited is a food specialist who is knowledgeable about the connection between how ingredients grow and the food we consume. This expert discussed how the bee life can be used to show the value of bio diversity in food production.
Another source we have invited is a journalist who explained the issue of public toilets, safe access, use and perceived safety can reflect to how women and other marginalize communities are treated in that region and what is the positive effect that all should welcome by including more toilets in the public space.

In addition to these sources, we have also invited an online petition director who spoke about the link between the virtual world and real communal actions. This expert shared his insights on how social media can be used to influence street-level change and make a real impact on communities.

Overall, our initiative is dedicated to bringing together experts from various fields to share their knowledge and perspectives on important issues. We believe that by hearing from a diverse group of experts, we can gain a better understanding of the complex issues facing our world today. While there are other sources that we considered as important that we didn’t mention, having received the funding will increase our visibility and access to larger pool of experts.
Our initiatives not only invites unique experts to share their knowledge and perspectives, but also utilizes computational tools to map and understand the issues we wish to tackle. In one episode, we aimed to understand the reasoning behind a divisive gubernatorial race that was filled with misinformation relating to discrimination towards the race and religion of one of the candidates. This candidate was from a certain group of minorities and the misinformation spread through social media.

To understand the situation better, we superimposed the distribution of the gubernatorial election percentage on a map and compared it to the distribution map of the race and religion of the population of the area. To our surprise, the maps showed no correlation. We then tried superimposing the map against the average property value of the area, which yielded a more positive correlation.

From this, we reached the conclusion that the election was not divisive due to racial or religious discrimination issues, but rather a classism issue. This could be due to access to education or the tendency of certain classes to be prone to misinformation. It highlights the importance of understanding the nuances and complexity of issues, rather than jumping to conclusions based on surface level observations. The use of computational tools and analysis allowed us to gain deeper insights and understanding of the issue at hand.
And The City understand the importance of having a diverse team of researchers with different backgrounds and perspectives, and using digital tools to understand complex issues. However, we believe that the one of the most important aspect of our research is sharing in an open source platform manner so that anyone can be inspired or could pick up the topic/ information and use it in their own research/ project.

The city is a complex and multifaceted entity that cannot be fully understood through a single lens. By bringing together experts from different fields and different parts of the world, we can gain a more complete understanding of the issues facing our cities today. This includes experts from fields such as social politics academician, published author, online petition director as well as other experts who have lived and worked in different cities around the world. As architects and planners we also offer our perspective to others from other disciplines which are invited to use the output.

We use digital tools to gather existing data, cross it, overlay it and analyse so, we gain more detailed and accurate understanding of the city through diverted, layered lenses. This helps us to identify patterns and trends in data that might otherwise go unnoticed. The outfit is presented in a public, open manner which others can easily access and use.
When it comes to determining a theme for our research, we strive to find a topic that is not only relevant and important, but also one that will have a lasting impact on society. This means that we take the time to carefully consider and research different issues that are currently affecting our world in order to find the most impactful and meaningful topic to focus on.

Once we have identified a potential theme, we then begin to delve deeper into the subject by searching for articles and papers that relate to the issue at hand. This allows us to gain a more nuanced and in-depth understanding of the topic, and to explore different perspectives and opinions on the matter.

One of the key indicators of a good topic is when two main researchers hold differing opinions on the issue. This diversity of perspectives is important, as it allows us to consider multiple angles and to gain a more well-rounded understanding of the topic.

With this research in hand, we then set to work writing an essay on the topic, which we publish on our website and in urbannext.net. We also invite experts related to the topic to join us on our podcast, where they can share their thoughts and insights on the issue and engage in a deeper discussion with our audience.

Overall, our goal is to provide valuable and meaningful insights on a wide range of important and impactful issues, with the aim of fostering a more informed and engaged society.
The global world is a complex network of interconnected systems, and understanding the impact of our actions on these systems is crucial for addressing the environmental challenges we face today. One of the main issues we are trying to tackle is the understanding that the planet can be seen as an ecosystem, where what we do in one place can affect a whole network of life.

In our research, we have studied the patterns of migration for various species, such as the stork. In Lebanon, for example, storks are often seen as pests and are hunted in an effort to exterminate them. However, this action can have far-reaching consequences. Storks travel to Europe to mate with their monogamous partners, and the death of one stork on their migratory path can affect the ability of another stork to continue its bloodline. Furthermore, during the winter when they migrate to South Africa, another habitat is affected as a result of the local action that took place in Lebanon and triggers a global eco change in South Africa and in Latvia.

Another research we found out that having to create habitat for wild bees, in the form of a bees house in the city will affect the possibility of pollination of vegetations. It is important to understand that small actions can have a big impact on the environment and that we must take a holistic approach to addressing these issues. By understanding the interconnectedness of the global ecosystem, we can take steps to minimize the impact of our actions and work together in an international effort towards a more sustainable future.
Currently, our platform has 6 papers and a podcast series with 8 episodes published with several content provider as Spotify also presented in on our website and distributed through the online magazine UrbanNext.net.
The articles cover a variety of topics related to urban development and design, such as rural trend, densification, pandemics, and city politics. The podcast series, which is also hosted on our website, features interviews with 8 experts in their field. We have a growing listener base of 300 people from all around the world, including Germany, the United States, Indonesia, Spain, Thailand, Italy, France, and other countries. Our social media following consist of 63 followers, a number we aim to address by increasing our post frequency.

Having the funding would give us the ability to expand our reach and gain access to more guests for our podcast series. With more resources, we could invite a wider range of experts and cover a broader range of topics related to urban development and design. Additionally, funding would allow us to increase our social media visibility and reach a larger audience. This would give us the opportunity to share our content with a broader audience and raise awareness about the importance of urbanism and a better design of the public space. Also, growing the audience could potentially support us with finding a sponsor and turning the project into a self sustain on the longer term and moreover, engage in realising urban projects while using the And The City research part as our light house.
As the projects wishes to address diverses topics concerning the lifestyle using sustainable methods and supporting healthy community, it is correlating to the European framework on sustainability. The project deals with equality topics, between gender and between different groups and individuals in the local and global community. We deal with food / food growth topics, nature and wilde life. Our approch is that all tose topics are depending on the other and improving one will improve the other.
We are a diverse group, setting the example of collaboration with someone who is different from you (with different cultural background) and hold different perspective which for the best, widen your view on the different topics while practicing international joint effort.
