  • Description of the initiative
The aim of the project is to increase interest in creative subjects and creative education in general, which is at a very low level in the Czech Republic. A crucial part of the project is the promotion of group work and cooperation, the interest of all participants in the whole process and the common output. The process of creative work is more important than the result itself. The project achieves this through the involvement of professional tutors and contemporary artists from a wide range of visual arts disciplines.
There is no doubt that the participation of artists in schools has a very concrete positive impact for most of the children involved. Both the teachers and the professionals who have followed and evaluated the project over the course of the year agree in their reactions. This was particularly evident during the covid-19 pandemic and when we managed to integrate refugee children from Ukraine into the project.
At the same time, a network of coordinators is gradually expanding across the Czech Republic whose aim is to oversee the quality of the project, to be an active coordinator and mediator between all participating groups. Thanks to this, last year we managed to involve hundreds of students across the Czech Republic, and to involve several dozen schools and artists in the project.
The Artists To Schools is based on close cooperation between children, teachers, lecturers and artists and takes place directly in primary schools. The pupils consult the progress of the artwork and move their project towards its final form over the following months. The final outcome of the Artists To Schools is a group presentation of the resulting realisations or records of the collaborative process.
The authors of the project are members of the educational platform Do You Have a Knack for Art?, who have been promoting it as part of art education classes for the past three years.

Sustainability, recycling and zero pollution is one of the essential components in the project approach. The artists focus on ways to recycle materials and create as little waste as possible. The visual arts and creative ways of working not only enable this, but become a model for other sectors - this information gets as close to the children as possible thanks to the Artists to Schools and they automatically work with it. The three years of the project have produced zero pollution and all the works produced have the ability to be recycled again.
The form of representation, the choice of artistic approach or medium is arbitrary. It is possible to use both traditional approaches (e.g. painting, sculpture, printmaking) and new media (video, photography, computer animation or the use of social networks). Contemporary artists offer children a wide range of creative approaches, introducing them to contemporary technologies or elements of sustainable design. While the aesthetic form of the works does not override the joy of creation, it is an integral part of the outcomes of the collaborative work. Thanks to the cooperation with major galleries (National Gallery Prague or DOX Contemporary Art Centre), it is possible to raise awareness of this kind of projects and, in general, the cultural contribution to the whole society.
The project is barrier-free and accessible to all without discrimination. Children work in groups that they create themselves. The promotion of cooperation, the division of roles in the group and the interest in the whole process and the common outcome are important goals and inclusive means of the project design. The results of their work are then presented by the pupils in the form of a joint presentation, in which all members of the group again participate. However, the common goal is also to open up various topical issues and find ways to approach them through creative means. Educational workshops and support in the form of consultations are provided free of charge to educators. The affordability of the project is set in such a way that it does not burden the participants in any way. The project is set up in such a way that participants are fairly rewarded.
Artists to Schools for 2023 works with schools in municipal district of Prague 7, 10 and 22. The reason for this is a long-term cooperation with school representatives, the city district and local communities. We focus on working with children in the long term and create special activity programs for them (daily workshops for children Art!!! or Art Festival!!!), which take place in the space of Prague 7. The projects are created in a barrier-free way, are open to everyone, focus on inclusion and specially address children from socially disadvantaged families.
The project involves various organisations, institutions and community projects. At the beginning of the project, we cooperate with selected city districts (Prague 7, 10 and 22) and their departments (culture, education, community activities), followed by cooperation with representatives of schools at all levels (principals - teachers), artists (Academy of Fine Arts), local communities and organizations (parent community promoting creativity in schools) to gallery institutions (National Gallery Prague, DOX Centre for Contemporary Art). We also communicate the project on a national and European level thanks to our long-standing cooperation on projects with Slovak, Hungarian or German galleries and educational institutions.
Artists to Schools involves actors of the cultural policy of the capital city of Prague as well as the municipal districts of Prague 7, 10 and 22, representatives of educational organizations or the education department of the municipality, and representatives of primary schools. The project also involves gallery institutions and artists (AVU).
The Artists to Schools is a demanding synthesis of the requirements and intentions of representatives of all organisations, mediated by the project organisers. The project is created in mutual cooperation and within a fixed time schedule. The mutual cooperation has been positive thanks to the jointly promoted idea of strengthening creative education in primary schools. The implementation of the project brought together for the first time educational and cultural organisations in the borough and used their potential and skills to realise a jointly defined problem.
Creative education in our primary schools, with a focus on art education, has no alternative history. The platform Do You Have a Knack for Art?, which is behind the project Artists to Schools, has been trying for 15 years to promote innovative ways of creative approach in the classroom in our schools, and thanks to the international platform Do You Have a Knack for Art? also in neighbouring countries. Only in recent years projects can be adequately funded and, as a result, expanded. The project Artists to Schools, implemented in cooperation with other organisations in Prague 7, 10 and 22, is an innovative and unprecedented project that has attracted a significant response and that other municipalities and schools across the country want to build on.
Artists To School is replicable in any elementary school in our country, city or district, as long as the principles that define it remain: creativity - integration - inclusivity - collaboration - education. A change of location does not change its content and intent. On the one hand, the project's methodology and implementation processes are clearly defined, but on the other hand it allows for flexibility and creativity, adapting to the situation. Thanks to data collection, mapping, referencing and evaluation of the project, we have managed to set up the project methodology in such a way that the project process makes use of previous knowledge and information and avoids possible mistakes.
The methodology and approach in the implementation of the project was developed in collaboration with all the organisations involved. The methodological basis of the project was worked on by long-standing experts in creative education, based on international practice (e.g. Artama - Nipos), members of creative and educational organizations (Do You Have a Knack for Art?, Creative Prague), representatives of schools and city districts. In the first phase of the project we cooperate with the selected city district and its departments, followed by cooperation with school representatives at all levels, reaching out to artists from local communities and organizations to gallery institutions. The methodology builds on the humanities curriculum and cross-cutting themes in schools and complements them with the active involvement of artists (to a specified extent) under the guidance of professional tutors and teachers.
We believe that fostering human creativity is the way to sustainable living on our planet. The project develops children's active citizenship, inclusiveness, cooperation and interest in the creative development of their own personality.
The successful completion of the project in 2022 (despite the covid-19 epidemic and the impact of the war in Ukraine) has significantly raised interest in the project and its implications. In the following year, we plan to expand the project to the whole Czech Republic and involve all schools interested in the project. Currently, there are dozens of primary schools from all parts of the country. We believe that this will change the way we look at creative subjects and in the future also at the creative sector, the possibilities of using artistic disciplines and human creativity in general, as is already common in developed European countries. The organisations or communities that have already been involved in the project in the past also contribute to the development of our initiative with positive references.
