The theme of the 27th Biennial of Design (BIO 27) was exploring a growing and ambitious movement that takes inspiration from vernacular architecture and design to shape a more resilient and equitable future. BIO 27 brought together forward-thinking and environmentally conscious designers, architects and professionals from other disciplines. Within the several months-long collaboration process they developed projects for the exhibition that tackled possible alternatives for the future.

The first digital platform of its kind, developed with open-source coding by NGO Circular Berlin & social business LoopLook, informs consumers in a playful way about how to prolong the life of their clothes. The beautifully designed integrated tools indicate the best suited reuse services & initiatives in their neighbourhood.

The Palace of Imagination is both a process and a series of multifunctional small structures and collective spaces that were built to tackle the needs of the residents of Emboladoura neighborhood through different participatory strategies. “PI” was able to convert socio-spatial vulnerability into a transforming movement, where each “individual being” and “the collective being” can expand their imaginary, and thus overcome external and self-imposed oppression.

Application of NBS for local adaptation of educational buildings to climate change

The LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN project aims to increase the resilience of educational buildings through the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as prototypes of climate adaptation and improved well-being. The first set of NBS has been implemented in a Spanish school in a rural area. We have got a significant reduction in the temperature inside the building at the same time we have increased local biodiversity, produced new living educational material and beautified the environment.

An experimental mural from bioplaster, using locally sourced food waste

A mural shaped from bioplaster developed by Blanka Byrwa, made with students and put on the facade of Primary School No. 17 in Gdynia. Jacek Wielebski's design represents seaweed – macroalgae from which sodium alginate is sourced, highlighting the problem of rapidly diminishing biodiveristy in the Baltic Sea. The plaster was made out of waste from the school canteen, local restaurants and construction waste collected from the immediate surroundings of the school.
